This week’s playlist left me practically brain-dead as the subject is groups put together on reality TV. We have 4 groups formed through the Making the Band franchise and 2 groups from the WB series Popstars. So, let’s get into it!

The original Making the Band boyband, O-Town, was put together by embarrassed pop svengali Lou Pearlman. The boys enjoyed some success with their first album and first single “Liquid Dreams” but eventually disbanded in 2003. One of the lead singers, Ashley Parker Angel, had a reality show on MTV called There and Back which chronicled Ashley’s trying to balance his home life with his pregnant fiance and trying to get his career back. Unfortunately, his album tanked.

Diddy took over the Making the Band franchise in 2002 forming the rap/r&b/reggae ensemble Da Band comprising of group members Ness, Babs, Dylan, Chopper City, Sara Stokes, and Frederick aka Miami. Along the way we saw them display classic bitchassness with their constant fighting and diva attitudes. We also got to meet that hot ass Mysterious. Now she made some good ass TV! Da Band was disbanded by Diddy in the third season for being lame as hell.

After the suckiness that was Da Band left America’s memories, Diddy set out to form his answer to the Pussycat Dolls with formation of Danity Kane in 2004. The ladies–Aundrea, Aubrey, Dawn, D. Woods, and Shannon–seem to be escaping the Bad Boy curse. Both of their albums debuted at the top of the album charts. Their first album was even certified platinum.

With the success of the girl group, Diddy wanted to find DK’s male counterparts. Day26 was formed during Making the Band 4. Their self-titled debut album just topped the charts last week. The boys–Q, Willie, Mike, Robert, and Brian–will tour this summer with the ladies of Danity Kane. Making the Band seems to be on a hot streak…but how long can it last with Diddy behind the wheel?

Before the DK and PCD, there was EC–Eden’s Crush. Eden’s Crush was formed on a terrible pre-American Idol show called Popstars in 2001. Their first single, Get Over Yourself, did pretty well in the US, peaking at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their album peaked at #6. The group dissolved a year later amidst rumors of infighting. The group did spawn two stars (used loosely!). Rossana Tavarez became a popular host on Telemundo and the TV Guide channel. Lead singer Nicole Scherzinger went on to become the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls and launch her own solo career.

Popstars came back for the second and final season to look for a mixed-gender group later on in 2001. They formed Scene 23 but no one really cared. The ratings for Popstars 2 were terrible and interest in the group and their first single, I Really Don’t Think So, was nonexistant. The album tanked and the single was never commericially released. One members, Josh Henderson, got a little attention after the group parted ways when he started dating Ashlee Simpson and appeared on her MTV reality show. He dumped Ash and American dumped his ass when no one showed interest in his solo material.
