//Limelight Spotlight: Charlotte Sometimes//

Upon first listen, I was convinced Charlotte Sometimes was another British import. Her velvety voice called to mind one of my favorite British newcomers, Adele. Her razor sharp witty songwriting reminded me of Lily Allen and Kate Nash. But, finally, score one for the home-team; she’s American-made.
Â
This Wall, New Jersey native’s influences are all over the place and they’re all made apparent on her debut album, “Waves and the Both of Us.” They range from Billie Holiday to Jeff Buckley to Fiona Apple. Her music is hard to fit into a box, but why would you want to? There are enough cookie-cutter, manufactured artist out there. Change is good, Sometimes.
Â
Her first single, “How I Could Just Kill a Man,” is an addictive little ditty that sounds like a happy skip in the park but if you really listen to the lyrics, you’ll catch the song’s dark metaphors covered by the sweet pop instrumental. A little more straight-foward is the cheeky “Sweet Valium High.” Charlotte starts the second verse singing, “Do you want it/’cause when you f*ck me/you are loving me and I am owning you.” Are you in love, too?
Â
You’re going to want to know Charlotte. You’ll get the chance when her “Waves and the Both of Us” hits stores everywhere tomorrow. You can also check Charlotte and her band out this summer when she opens on the Warped Tour.
