If anyone could unseat Katy Perry‘s monster hit of summer 2008, “I Kissed A Girl,” it’s the reigning Queen of the summertime hit, Rihanna. After 7 weeks on top, Katy Perry’s song about girl-on-girl action finally slips to #3, making way for a new #1 song. That song is Rihanna’s “Disturbia” which climbs from 3-1 this week on the strength of 148,000 downloads. This brings Rihanna’s total of number 1 hits to 4–tying her with Mariah Carey and Beyoncé for the most #1′s by a female artist this decade–and it only took her three years to do so. Rih’s other chart toppers are “S.O.S.,” “Umbrella,” and “Take a Bow.”
This week’s other big singles chart story comes from eclectic pop dynamo, M.I.A. The singer’s song “Paper Planes” continues it’s rapid climb to the top of the chart, reaching a new peak of #5 from #16 last week, a career best for the Londoner, born Mathangi Arulpragasam. ‘Planes’ sold 138,000 downloads this week, probably all thanks to the song being featured in the TV ads for stoner flick, Pineapple Express.
