Popeater.com got their hands on American Idol winner, David Cook’s first single off his new album. The song is called Light On and it will be officially released to iTunes September 30th. While there is nothing bad about the song, it doesn’t really stick in my head. Definitely worth a listen though!

David Cook has sold out his rock soul and all hopes of credibility with this release… where is David Cook in this song? Nothing fresh, groundbreaking or current in this approach… just more karoke singing from the winner of Idol… Cornell wrote this song, and David Cook adds nothing of himself in it – all I hear is Soundgarden.

  2. mel says:

Soundgarden aint bad. Having Cornell write a song for you aint bad either. And the vocals are all unmistakably David Cook. He’s a natural tenor, which is unusual for rock these days. I don’t think his voice sounds like anyone else out there, certainly not Cornell. The chorus is pretty catchy. It’s a hit alright.

  3. scottt says:

This song is over produced, and Cook’s vocals are overwrought. It is supposed to be written by Chris Cornell, or one of his throwaway’s… Cook led us to believe he would have some original material to offer, and I don’t see it in this song. He lets Cornell’s style and influence obliterate his – not a good sign or starting point for someone trying to forge a rock identity or respect.

  4. Sarah says:

I do not like this song. It sounds like all the others out there. No originality at all. All I hear is screaming.

  5. Ronda says:

This song is nothing like I expected from Cook. I hope this is not an indication of what his album is going to be like. I was expecting something unique and different, but not!

  6. LL says:

As a Cook fan, I hope this isn’t an indication of his album, which he self proclaimed would be different. Absolutely nothing different about this song. Over produced and over song.

  7. Me says:

Oh, come on I don’t know what you guys are listening to! I like it!

  8. Char says:

I love David Cook, but…I don’t really love this song. The last part is the best where his voice is pure and not shouting. But…I don’t know. This song just doesn’t do it for me.

  9. Ken says:

David Cook!!!! What happened, man? They totally dogged you out, dude! Your Analog Heart songs were 500% better than this one. I’m not giving up on you, though, cuz I know you’ve got it in you to make some kick-ass music!

  10. Ryan says:

Come on, everyone. RCA/19 own him lock, stock, and barrel. Did anyone expect anything different?! The song is growing on me, but, no, it is no Analog Heart. I’m not surprised, but it certainly doesn’t seem to me to be David Cook’s fault.

I really wanted to like this single, but I just can’t. David’s uniqueness does not translate in the song. There is nothing separating this release from run of the mill Daughtry or Nickelback release – who he should be trying to separate himself from with a quickness. Aside from writing the song, there is way too much of Chris Cornell’s vibe in it – the music sounds too much like Soundgarden, and if you close your eyes and listen closely, it sounds like Cornell is singing. If I wanted a Chris Cornell record, I would buy one from Chris Cornell. I didn’t expect to hear David lose so much of what makes him special…his fans from the show will buy it in droves… I’m not so sure he will have such an easy sell to the public at large… I’m lowering my previous expectations for the album, and hope there is more authentic and substantive David Cook material in it.

  12. Michele says:

I don’t like it, never watched American Idol. I didn’t get through the whole song.

  13. jb says:

This song sounds nothing like soundgarden or cornell…you’re all delusional if you think it does. David Cook’s voice is very distinctive and his power vocals come through loud and clear! There are some elements that are better than AH some that are not…but DC is no longer an indie artist and if you think this song is overproduced, then you also think foo fighthers, my chemical romance, 30 seconds from mars and coldplay are overproduced if not more than this song! All in all, the song is goog and about 10X better than any other ai winners first single. I like it!

  14. dan says:

Yep, overproduced, power rock ballad, emo-rock, schmaltzy lyrics, typical big studio release…..and you know what? It’s still good. In fact compared to the crap out there on the charts, it’s great. Dude can rock it!

  15. AdExecutive says:

This song has Caldwell written all over it. This guy is a dumb ass for dating such a D list loser.

His voice is gritty through the entire song, you can not hear his tone that he is famous for…and having other songwriters write his songs is stupid. I agree, I like the Analog Heart songs better…they were catchier…had better hooks. This song is ok, not great.

And I am sick of hearing about Caldwell. Cook, you totally lost credibility when you started dating her. Wake up!
