//Beyoncé Wants To ‘Smash’, Jon McLaughlin Wanted To ‘Smack’ First//

Another day, another song on Beyonce’s new album I Am…Sasha Fierce found to be meant for someone else. You already heard the story behind “If I Were A Boy” and Simon Cowell broke the news that the second single “Halo” was written for his protege Leona Lewis. Now, it’s been discovered that another song from the deluxe edition of the album, “Smash Into You,” was written for someone else, Limelight Spotlight artist Jon McLaughlin.

The song originally called “Smack Into You” was written for McLaughlin’s sophomore album Ok Now by Tricky Stewart and The-Dream. Though, the song was later scrapped from the album, Jon did perform the song live on his summer/fall tour. Not letting an amazing song go to waste, it was presented to Beyonce and changed to “Smash Into You” (that’s the part Beyonce must have “written” in order to receive that coveted writing credit because the two versions are practially identical lyrically otherwise).

Here’s what Jon had to say about the song in his bio:

“Smack Into You,” written and produced by Grammy winners Tricky and The-Dream, is about falling head over heels in love, a combination of the Police’s “Every Breath You Take” and U2’s “With Or Without You,” melding acoustic guitar and McLaughlin’s piano to create a passionate undertow. “This song has such a great groove and is so fun to play live,” says Jon. “It creates such a special moment in the room.”

There’s no big deal in a scrapped song being passed to another artist, but certainly there is something a little more unsettling about a writing credit being given for changing one word–and more unsettling are the people that will still consider that artist a songwriter. It’s a real shame and real songwriters shouldn’t stand for it. But when it comes to getting a song on a superstar artist like Beyonce’s album, you’d pretty much sell your soul for the bragging rights (and money), too.  The exposure you’d get and the potential that the song turns into a hit is so high that it outweighs sharing the hardwork.

Unsavory!

TJ I completely forgot about the whole Leona Lewis/Halo song situation. Good eye! I hate to say this out loud but just imagine the songs Mrs. Carter claimed she wrote before the rise of blogs??? As a Bee fan from her “So Good” days, I like Jon’s take better.

She’s been doing this since Survivor. lol The fans brave enough to speak up were called haters so it never made much noise. And it still won’t. It’ll be pushed under the rug because Bey’s fanbase is so rabid. Just look at the youtube link to Jon’s version. Her fans have taken over saying it’s ok because she sang it differently and the title isn’t the same. I dunno about them but I don’t call that songwriting. I have too much respect for real writers who pour their heart and soul into their work. The sleepless nights being faced with writer’s block–all of that gains my respect. Not sitting back while these people do the real work, change one word, get a credit, then sit up in a video talking about how personal your work is while you pretend to be deep in thought scribbling on a note pad. No. Doesn’t work for me. I’ll always love Bey for the amazing vocalist and performer she is but she’ll never have my respect as a “songwriter” no matter how many credits she collects.

lol this aint nothin new…who said that Kanye??? ahahaha

  4. Lola says:

The writers are Dream and Tricky Stewart, are they listed on the album? Why would John have to be listed…did he write it?

Furthermore, Leona has responded to the rumors circulating about Halo via interview. She said she passed on Halo because she felt it didn’t fit her voice.

Also…BC Jean has cleared up the rumors of IIAWB as well. She is listed as the writer and has said she was paid for the song.

  5. TJ Tanner says:

Thanks Lola but I think you missed the whole point of the post/rant. These are all songs (Halo, SIY) that were completed before reaching Beyonce, however, Beyonce shares a writing credit for the songs having contributed very minimally or not at all for every song but IIWAB. Jon did not write “Smack Into You,” and we never claimed he did. BC Jean is credited as a writer for IIWAB but that in no way means Mathew Knowles did not set out to get Beyonce’s name listed as one of the writers originally like the rest of the songs. It just didn’t go down this time.

lmao at Rihanna hahahaha I LOVE SASHA FIERCE lmao

  7. Louise says:

Wasn’t Beyoncé the one complaining about songwriters who did this once upon a time in “Soul Survivors”?!? Shame on you, Beyoncé!

  8. Erin says:

Ew! I hate that she does this! She doesn’t have to be a writer on all songs. Just do what you do best, sing!!!

    TJ Tanner
Matter how you or the idiot who wrote this article feel. ONE WORD can change any thing! I don’t hold things like song credits against anyone because I don’t care how much money they are making off the music they sing! If they are allow her to change it who are you all to say shes fake she this and that. If I give one word of imput to someone’s song whether they wrote it already and allowed me to change it (with their permission) I want my credit whether I added it and or what or maybe! Find something else to hate about and tell people they are rabid about this subject is foolishess I guess idiots love drama!~

  10. Jesse Vaughn says:

no matter what she does someone is always going to make a negitive blog about her , we dont know what went down in the studios when rerecording the music i know as a songwriter myself if an artist pays for the song and change three sentences or three words they have the right to put there name along with mines because it is not the original , she’s not doing anything illegal if it was such a big deal the writers or the singers of the song would be making a big fuss out of all this and they arent.

  11. Anonymous says:

leave B alone…people always gotta complain about something…there are more serious matters going on around you than this…let B “Live her life”…(btw i’m not claiming that quote,i think some of the wrting credits go to T.I. and Rihanna. lol!)

  12. the real diva says:

im glad someone finally put this out here.. everyone always give her props for OTHER peoples writting (all she does it buy it, you can buy anyones song and credit as your own).

  13. Kiya says:

I tell you right now if this was some other female who did the exact same thing they would be called all types of names and you Beyonce fans need to know what a hater is people are giving their opinioon that doesn’t always mean they are haters there are some Beyonce fans out there who speak the truth!!! And would yaw please stop sayin leave Beyonce alone there are alot more people going through rough times!!!

  14. Kiya says:
