There were some disappointing cuts tonight on American Idol. The show, now in its eighth season, whittled its way through 147 contestant in Hollywood week to find their 36 semifinalist whose fate now lies with America’s votes.

The dismissal of contestant Jamar Rogers who, with his best friend Danny Gokey, lit up Hollywood week with his unique style and amazing vocal chops was met with shock by the contestants waiting to find out if they’d make it to perform on the big stage.

The judges were smart enough to let Danny continue on. Other smart choices included Stevie Wright, Jackie Tohn, Kris Allen, Anoop Desai, and Megan Corkrey.

There were also some disappointing let-throughs. Like Nick “Norman Gentle” Mitchell. He was a favorite of ours for his hilarious stage antics, but we were almost sure the judges would be smart enough not to waste a spot in the top 36 on him. Wrong. While a capable singer like Jamar was sent packing, Nick hammed his way through Hollywood week and got through because of his split personality’s entertainment value.

On the girls’ side, early favorite Frankie Jordan‘s fate matched Jamar’s. After being asked to “sing for her life,” she was told she made their decision easier by not standing out enough. In an attempt to soften the blow, Simon Cowell told a devastated Jordan, “You wouldn’t have won anyway.” Ouch!

Extremely sensitive (and annoying) contestant Tatiana Del Toro, cried her way through yet another celebration. She’ll compete for your votes next week along with 11 others starting out the competition rounds.
