So remember when I kinda ripped American Idol season 8 semi-finalist Stephen Fowler a new one when he decided to take on Michael Jackson‘s “Rock With You“?
At that time, I said there were only three reasons to attempt an MJ song: 1) You are Ace Young circa season 5 and you can kill it like he did “Butterfliesâ€; 2) Your name is Sanjaya; 3) You want to go home. Well, add one more reason to that list: 4) You’re forced into it with a theme week!
The top 13 finalists will sing the great American pop song book aka Michael Jackson songs for the first real performance night of the competition Tuesday (March 10) according to E! News.
In the past, contestants were warned by the judges about choosing to perform songs from the elusive King of Pop, but that hasn’t stopped some from trying. Like Ace and Stephen mentioned above, last season’s winner David Cook did MJ’s “Billie Jean“–thankfully, he changed it up.
Top 13 contestant Kris Allen already dove head first into the gloved one’s songbook by performing “Man in the Mirror.”
Too bad Tatiana Del Toro is gone. She and her other personality could have performed the Michael/Janet Jackson duet “Scream.” Shame!

I am not sure I will be able to sit through 13 Michael Jackson songs.
Anyway they should take a look at Australian Idol’s winner Wes Carr rendition of MJ’s song Black or White he even got the moves down right. It will be hard to top.
