It was a close one last night on American Idol as the results were revealed. The season’s first genuine shocker — one that would force the judges to whip out their option to save a contestant — was almost a reality.
Wednesday night, the contestants took on the sounds of Motown Records with coaching by a Motown legend Smoky Robinson. Many of the guys were praised for their strong performances. Among the most praised was former theatre performer Adam Lambert, acoustic guitar player Kris Allen, and dueling pianist Matt Giraud. So, it was a real surprise to see Matt sent to the dreaded stools to await his fate as he faced elimination.
Joining him, not surprisingly, was Michael Sarver. The charming father’s performance of Aint Too Proud To Beg was panned for being amateurish.
Another guy who didn’t fair well Wednesday was Scott MacIntyre. His cheesy rendition of Can’t Hurry Love landed him in the bottom three with Matt and Michael.
Ryan Seacrest asked judge Randy Jackson whom he thought didn’t deserve to be on stage with the threat of elimination looming over them. Jackson quickly answered Matt. But America’s votes revealed Matt was in more trouble than we thought; Scott was sent back to safety leaving Matt and Michael to sweat it out during Stevie Wonder’s electrifying Motown medley.
After the votes were revealed, it was Michael who was left to sing for his Idol life. Another rocky performance later, he was told the judges would be holding on to their save and he would be going home.
The top 9 perform again next Tuesday.
