//American Idol Recap: Results – It’s Down To Lucky 7 After A Sad Goodbye//

With the more questionable contestants gone, American Idol season 8 is down to some strong competitors, so it’s not surprising that last night’s bottom three could all provoke the judges to finally release their option to save a singer facing elimination.

The previous night the top eight performed songs from the year they were born. Most rose to the challenge but others fell victim to bad song choice.

Lil Rounds, who has yet to have an amazing performance on the big stage, was slammed for her copy-cat performance of Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It.” The judges warned that her lack of originality would get her into trouble with voters. They were correct; Lil made her way to the bottom three for the first time.

Scott MacIntyre — beloved for his positive spirit despite being legally blind — also didn’t score high marks for his performance of Survivor’s ”The Search Is Over.” He took a risk ditching his piano for an electric guitar, but the results were underwhelming, landing him in the bottom three.

Anoop Desai chose a great song and received glowing feedback for his performance of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors,” but he still found himself in danger of going home.

Simon Cowell remarked that up until that night, the save seemed unimportant but tonight’s bottom three definitely had some contestants worth saving.

When it was all said and done, Lil Rounds was sent back to safety leaving Anoop and Scott to sweat it out waiting for the results. Soon after Ryan Seacrest announced that Anoop was safe and it would be Scott singing for his life.

Another just-OK performance later, the judges were left to deliberate. After some back and forth, Simon, who said the choice isn’t just about the contestant facing elimination but also about who’s left, decided it was the end of the line for Scott.

Seven remain: Anoop, Lil, Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey, Kris Allen and Matt Giraud.
