//American Idol Recap: Allison Iraheta And Adam Lambert Own Rock & Roll Theme Night//

Rock & Roll is alive and well and found its way to American Idol last night.
What could easily be the best final four group of contestants ever on Idol, the kids brought out their inner rockers for the Rock theme week. What that means is a whole lot of leather, a ton of black, plenty of useless chains dangling from various articles of clothing, eye liner galore, and some wicked performances.
Now that we’re down to only four people, the contestants were able to perform their solo songs and, to fill up the extra time, were paired into twos for duets — something completely new for American Idol.
Like last week, there were no completely terrible performances. Each singer brought something memorable to their songs and didn’t let the theme, or their guest mentor, rock’s legendary axe picker Slash, intimidate them. But that’s not to say the judges would agree with me.
Let’s take a look at how it all went down:
Adam Lambert – Whole Lotta Love: Adam knew he’d have to step up to the plate big time when he chose a Led Zeppalin classic. But hello! It’s Adam. Not only does he step up to the plate, but he steals it, runs with it, and owns it consistently from week to week. This week was no exception. He brought the drama he’s known for, and those amazing high notes, and knock his performance out of the park. Randy loved it, saying rock needs to be his direction when he makes his album. Kara swooned wildly and made me feel just a bit dirty when she kept chanting “Yes!” after judging him. Very Herbal Essences commercial… Paula babbled something about loving it and Simon didn’t think anyone else would be able to top it. Well, durr Simon! Rock + Adam = forever!!
Allison Iraheta – Cry Baby: Allison, rocking some new hair extensions courtesy Adam Lambert’s hairdresser, chose to sing a Janis Joplin song for rock night and it was a total win! Allison’s rocky/bluesy voice was made to cover JJ songs. She added some personal touches to the song, but not so many that you couldn’t recognize it. The judges and I say this every week because it’s astounding what a girl at her age can do, but it seriously doesn’t matter. Allison is it! She will not win Idol because she just doesn’t have the fanbase that the others have, but she WILL make an album and it WILL go platinum. Randy and Kara weren’t as enthusiatic about the performance as I was mainly because of the song choice. Simon enjoyed the vocals and performance but thought she sounded a bit too much like the orginal, which led Allison to get a bit snippy while defending her choice. Tell him, Allie!!!
Kris Allen and Danny Gokey – Renegade: I have to say, I thought the duets were the most pointless things in the world. Only one person can win so why does it matter what they sound like together? They already made it through the group round during Hollywood week, so, dude, what’s the point? It kinda looked like Kris and Danny felt the same way because their duet of “Renegade” was soooo only OK, dawg. Neither could truly sell the rock persona they temporarily took on to get through the performance and they didn’t work together well on stage. Thank goodness for the solos — you know, the performances that really count. The judges felt the same way. They didn’t dislike it, but they didn’t love it either.
Kris Allen – Come Together: If there’s one thing I love about Kris (besides his extremely gorgeous mug) is the fact that he doesn’t change who he is no matter what the theme. He chose a song that was still rock but he didn’t change the way he normally sings, he didn’t throw on leather and slather his eyes with liner. He remained himself throughout the whole thing. His voice sounded great and the band rocked! Shame the judges didn’t love it the way I did. Randy gave him props for being who he is and playing the guitar like a pro. Kara didn’t enjoy it and said it was “trying too hard.” Paula also enjoyed that he remained himself, but Simon didn’t like it, saying it was a bit like “eating ice for lunch;” it leaves you with nothing to remember. OK…
Danny Gokey – Dream On: Danny picked probably one of the best rock songs ever, so he had to deliver or else! He delivered only half of the package. The front portion of the song was good. His voice shined even though he looked a bit uncomfortable on stage. But by the end when he was setting up for the big note, the vocals became painful to listen to. And then the last scream? No way! Leave that to Adam, Danny. Wasn’t good at all. None of the judges were blown away by the performance. Let me take that back. They were, but not in a positive way. Simon said that scream was like watching a horror movie, though he admitted he thinks Danny will be safe.
Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta – Slow Ride: So, remember when I went on and on about how pointless the duets were? OK… I take it back. The point of them, at least I think so, is to show how versatile the winner should be. Allison and Adam slayed their competition with their team up. Their voices sounded great together, but what’s more is that they both performed like they’ve been doing it professionally for years. They were miles ahead of poor Danny and Kris. It was simply incredible. The judges ate it up. Kara called them “rock God and rock Goddess.” Simon even thinks Adam may have helped Allison stay in the competition a week longer. I hope so!!
Predictions: Everyone is so good but someone still has to go. I think it will come down to Kris and Allison with Allie leaving.
See if I’m correct tonight when the results show airs live on Fox with a performance from season 5 success, Grammy winner Chris Daughtry.
