When American Idol season 8′s top 13 contestants performed on the big stage for the first time during a Michael Jackson themed week back in March, Paula Abdul made a bold prediction. She told both 26-year-old Adam Lambert of Los Angeles and 28-year-old Danny Gokey of Milwaukee, WI that she’d see them both in the finals. Ladies and gentlemen, Paula was wrong.
No one ever counted on 23-year-old Kris Allen of Conway, AR to be the dark horse that would make it all the way — not even himself. “I never thought I’d make it this far,” Kris said during a results show a couple weeks back. But he did. During last night’s results show the final two contestants vying for the American Idol title would be Adam and Kris.
While Adam showed off his flashy style, incredible vocal range, and commanding stage presence, Kris was more laid back, often sitting behind his piano or bringing his acoustic guitar to heighten a performance.
Adam seemed like the favorite to win right out of the gate. He scored several big moments during the season with memorable performances of “Mad World” during the year they were born week, “Tracks of My Tears” during Motown week, and “If I Can’t Have You” during disco week. It wasn’t until Kris performed “Aint No Sunshine” during Motown week that he was seen as a contender for the finals.
The two will duke it out next Tuesday (May 19) where they’ll perform three songs each, including the crowned Idol’s first single.
Season 8′s American Idol winner will be announced Wednesday, May 20.
