Adam Lambert broke some not-so-shocking news on the cover of Rolling Stone this week when the American Idol season 8 runner-up announced he is gay. And even though many people speculated about his sexuality and the revelation doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise, people still want to talk about it.

The extremely talented 27-year-old rocker spoke candidly to 20/20 about being out of the closet to the world. “I am gay and I’m very comfortable with it,” Lambert told reporter Chris Connelly. “I have been for a long time. I think it’s funny when people are like ‘Oh, he’s been hiding it!’”

Adam says he wasn’t hiding in the closet while on Idol, just not ready to “reveal the most intimate details of my personality.”

Adam wasn’t the only one talking about his sexuality during the interview. His mother revealed details about the moment she and Adam first talked about his being gay, which was triggered by a stage performance they had seen.

Check out the video above for the entire interview.

I was totally intriqued by the story of how his Mom asked him about his orientation and how open and wonderful that event seemed for them both.

I think about all the young people who kill themselves over this issue. How would their lives be if their parents had been as loving and supportive.

Can we hear from his father? How was his reaction?

  2. Claire says:

Deedle: in the RS interview, it talks about how his father and mother both knew that he was gay by the time he was thirteen, but decided to let him talk to them when he felt ready.

I think Adam is very fortunate to have such loving parents. I respect his honesty in Rolling Stone and 20/20 about his sexuality and I hope now he will move on and focus on his music again. His music is why we originally fell in love with him along with his stage presence and charisma. I can only hope that he doesn’t keep going on and on about his sexuality especially since it is so early in his career. It would be a shame for him to fizzle out and not be remembered for his amazing talent. If you are reading this Adam, a lot of people love you including me!

After watching 20/20 tonight, I have so much respect for both Adam and his mother. She seems like she could be an example for the millions of mothers out there who have gay children. They need to embrace their children for being gay instead of kicking them out of the house. They need to be told that it is OKAY to be gay. I have 5 children and they are still very young (younger than 15 yrs old) and if any of them come to realize that they are gay or bisexual, I will tell them I love them no matter what.
That being said, I think Adam is one of the best talents the country have witnessed in a long time. He reminds me of Elvis.

  5. ATL88 says:

To me and many of my friend, Adam reflects more to the today generation often face, divorced parents, not “a” typical (and not necessary just gay or not), and not necessary need a “church” behind them to be a good and solid person.
I respect him and how he makes it on his own path and hard work. He makes a great role model in many ways, not that you have to model after him as gay or go to Burning Man etc., but rather be true to yourself and love yourself.

  6. maryann says:

Now I know why Adam Lambert is so confident with himself. It is primarily because he has such loving parents. He can talk to his mom about anything in the world. Adam is truly lucky to have such an understanding mom.

  7. tyra says:

I guess the reason why Adam Lambert has such a strong personality and such a kind character is because he has the support of his parents. And that explains why he can be honest with people about his sexuality and not care what others think. He has his mother to talk to.

  8. Nights says:

yup..great supporters will do that to you..its really good to see that nowadays.
