Thousands watched on as a legend paid tribute to another legend as Stevie Wonder took to his piano for a song at Michael Jackson‘s memorial.
Like everyone else, the celebration was bittersweet for Wonder, who first met Michael as a young boy at Motown Records. “This is a moment that I wished I didn’t live to see come,” he said while sitting at his piano. “But as much as we may feel that we need Michael here with us, God must have needed him far more.”
“Michael, I love you, and I’ve told you that many times, so I’m at peace with that.”
He then reminisced about writing a song for young Michael and being wowed when he heard the finished product. That song? “I Can’t Help It,” from Michael’s debut solo album, Off The Wall. He twinkled a bit of the song before launching into the exceedingly appropriate “I Never Dreamed You’d Leave In Summer.”
