Fans of Pop/Rock sibling duo Aly & AJ we’re in for a little shock when earlier this month it was revealed that they were ditching the simple name (a combination of the Michalka sisters’ first names: Alyson and Amanda Joy) for a new edgy name 78violet.
“I know a lot of you guys are like ‘Oh my gosh! There’s a new band name! What’s going on? Are you guys like completely changing,’” AJ recalls of the initial fan reaction to the name change announcement during the girls’ first live Ustream chat. “We’re obviously still Aly and AJ. We haven’t changed as individual people, but we are really excited because this new record is definitely a new turning point in Aly and I’s not only careers but just how we feel about music”
The girls insist they’ve always wanted a band name but nothing “came up that was nearly cool enough” declared Aly.
“We changed our name to 78violet because we just felt a natural progression in our music.”
And that progression has been going on since the 2006 re-release of their debut album Into The Rush. The repackaged set included several new songs, but most notably was the more rock oriented single Chemicals React. They carried that sound straight into their stellar sophomore album, 2007’s Insomniatic, and plan to kick it up a few more notches on their self-titled third project.
When can we expect some new material from the first ever 78violet record? According to AJ: “most likely this Fall.”
