//Neon Reviews: Demi Lovato – Here We Go Again//

Demi Lovato promises her sophomore album Here We Go Again will feature a more soulful, mature artist. It hasn’t even been a full year since the singer/actress released her debut album Don’t Forget. So what could she have gone through in that short amount of time to end up with enough material for a new, more mature album? The drama filled life of a teenage girl does give one a lot to write about and that’s especially true for this 16-year-old beauty.

In those short few months, the singer has gone from the relatively unknown costar of the Jonas Brothers to a singer worthy of headlining her own tour, not to mention a songwriter worthy of some co-writing sessions with celebrated singer/songwriter John Mayer.

Clearly she’s had enough experiences to help craft the more mature sound she’s shooting for on her second go around. Only problem is, the album never quite gets there.

The album plays a game of ping pong: hitting the soulful vibe she wants to deliver on songs like the gorgeous Falling Over Me, Every Time You Lie and World of Chances, but always drifting back to the safe pop/rock sound she masterfully tackled on her debut album.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, though. Demi shines on the guitar-heavy Quiet. “It’s much too quiet in here/I wanna disappear/I’m hearing myself thinking too clear,” Demi yells on the chorus.

The set experiences a major setback in its maturity bid towards the end of the album with the addition of Gift of A Friend (a song Demi recorded for the newest Tinkerbell movie) and So Far, So Great–the theme song from Demi’s Disney Channel original series Sonny With A Chance. Although adorable, these filler tracks should have been omitted.

The Mouse House still has a very tight hold on this youngster and maybe she isn’t quite ready to jump head first into the world of adult pop but she’s shown enough growth to stay around for awhile for another shot. And there are definitely a few more 20-somethings not afraid to admit they listen to Demi Lovato.

I’m rooting for this girl. I’m 25 and she’s the only Disney star whose music I actually like. The Disney stigma is holding her back, because many people are too close-minded to even consider that someone from the Mouse House can have real talent.

Well, Gift Of A Friend and So Far, So Great are just bonus tracks. I HIGHLY doubt Demi said she wanted those on there, haha. Disney just wanted to get some publicity for the show (which is amazing) and the movie.

But I love your review :D

I have to say that Demi is the best singer Disney has, she puts the others in the dust. I got both of her albums and I was blown away with both. She has a great voice, and she gets a nice sum of fans being a Disney star, but being a Disney star also wards off potential fans. Being a singer for Disney, Nick or any children channel makes people think that they have immature songs that are overly poppy, but I could practically promise you that you play them a song and not tell them the artist, they’ll go download a track or two off itunes. One of my friends got her song La La Land just because it mentioned McDonalds and now considers Demi as a favorite artist, and I’ve heard comments like,”I try to hate Demi, but she’s so good.” The same thing is kind of similar with Jennette McCurdy. She’s a great country artist, and my only issue with her first song So Close is that the opening sounds too poppy, but other than that, great vocals and lyrics. But Demi’s vocals on Got Dynamite… she aced that track, even though she didn’t write it. Catch Me is written by her, though, and I love how well she expresses emotion. Every Time You Lie, Falling Over Me (with Jon McLaughlin, another of my fav artist) and World of Chances (with John Mayer, another fav) are other memorable ones. I didn’t really mind that So Far, So Great was on the cd (she owned that track with her vocals), but I agree that Disney wanted it on there. But that track used for that Tinkerbell movie or whatever could’ve been left off. Maybe they thought if they had Disney tracks on the cd, people would buy it, I don’t know. It seemed randomly put in, where So Far So Great fit in a little more. All in all, Demi has a good cd. She should get radio play, and hopefully the Disney thing won’t hold potenital fans back.
