New Music: John Mayer – Who Says
John Mayer is sounding a bit like Johnny Cash in his new single, “Who Says,” which is set to lead his new album, Battle Studies, currently scheduled for release November 17.
The sentimental tune finds Mayer mixing his pop prowess with hints of country-western with its steel guitar-heavy instrumental, which is only lent a few twinkles from a piano midway through.
Mayer is taking a more organic approach to the songs on Battle Studies. He built a studio in his home, but not all instruments for the record were recorded in one room. He and his band made use of each space in order to optimize the sound each could provide for the recording process.
Even after the success of his last album, Continuum, he’s not all that worried about “following” it. “You don’t follow it at all, you just leave it,” he said in a video on his blog which chronicles the making of the album. “You step to the side and you begin something completely new.”
Helping him reach this “completely new” sound is musician/producer Steve Jordan, who Mayer fans will know from his John Mayer Trio.
