As promised, Chris Brown dropped his long-awaited single, “I Can Transform Ya” featuring Lil Wayne and Swizz Beatz, today during a live chat on Justin TV.

Here’s the good (there’s a few):

  • You can’t look at the artwork that accompanies the single without smiling. Hello! Breezytron wearing a blue bow tie a la his infamous Larry King Live appearance? He can obviously have a good laugh at himself. Awesome sauce!
  • Swizz Beatz’s production is superb. Grungy electric guitars, signature whistle blowing, mixed with robotic sounds reminiscent of the Transformers series — so clever.
  • Minimal auto-tune usage! And when it is used, it has a purpose!
  • And lets not forget about the man of the hour (or last 8 months, let the gossip blogs and rags tell it).  Chris isn’t exactly using his voice to its full ability on the track, but he makes up for it ten fold with his charm.

Wait, here’s the bad:

  • Not exactly Weezy’s best work. And he has two mediocre verses. Yawnsville!  Besides his star power, he doesn’t add much to the song.
  • There’s no stick-out moment that would help propel the song to the success Chris NEEDS it to be. The hook isn’t catchy enough (”I can transform ya, I can transform ya”).
  • The song as a whole doesn’t show much growth for Chris Brown the artist. The strives he made with his crossover hit “Forever” are essentially erased. As a staunch CB fan, what I don’t want to see is him stunted as an artist beloved by his core fanbase, shunned by other listeners as that guy who does the same thing over and over.

Vedict: As a fan dying for Chris Brown’s return, I’m definitely excited to hear new music. As a music fan dying for artists to take more risks and grow, this song doesn’t do it.

THE SONG IS HOOOOOTTTT!!! LET’S GO CHRIS BREEZY!!!! wayne killed it!

    @TJ

Calm down! it’s only his FIRST single! There’s other singles to come out and listen to, to see if he’s ‘grown’ or not as a artist. Just wait! this is only a taste of what Chris has to offer off of ‘Graffiti’. YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE VIDEO YET! IT’S GONNA BE CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAZY!

  2. Ricky says:

CHHUUUCH! And you know I been going extra hard on Chris since the whole beatdown incident, but I’d admit if he had a hot joint. And this ain’t it. Plus, Weezy needs a timeout! He’s already all over “Forever”’s Indian twin, “Down” with Jay Sean. Fall back, roach.

  3. Chris Brown says:

This song is actually nice. The whole CB situation is what it is, doesn’t take away from the song. If Hitler(i know hes dead, just listen) made a bangin ass rap on a grimey beat and put Wayne or whoever on the hook, I’d still bump it, fuck it. its music people.

  4. Gwen says:

Ok, My expectation is partly to blame for my disappointment. You can barely hear Chris’ amazing voice on this track (what a waste). I was expecting way more fire, way more heat. It left me feeling nothing but disappointed. I was looking for something as catchy as RUN IT, SEXY BACK or Lollipop and all I got was a forgetable track. This isn’t a comeback track for Chris but I haven’t lost all faith, we still have 59 Tracks to sample.

  5. Brianna says:

i smell something………trash. wayne should be on this shit by hisself.

It grows on you. It’s just like “Forever” or “Single Ladies” it will take radio playing it over and over again to be addicting.
