Rihanna is back with a new look, new album, and new sound for her first single, “Russian Roulette.”
The 21-year-old pop goddess normally releases an uptempo, club banger ala “Pon De Replay,” S.O.S,” and “Umbrella” to lead her albums, but she’s a bit bolder now.
“Russian Roulette” is a smooth, intoxicating almost-ballad, written and produced by longtime collaborator and fellow Def Jam labelmate, singer/songwriter extraordinaire Ne-Yo.
Disappointed by that news? You shouldn’t be. Rihanna’s known for taking risks and this one will pay off. It shows she’s grown far beyond just wanting you to dance. She wants you to know she has substance…and a haunting voice inside of that super-fierce package.
“Russian Roulette” is the first single from Rih’s new album, Rated R, in stores November 23.

This song is great. Listen, it’s time to grow with Rihanna. This song will leave her stamp on the music industry. Rihanna did something that everyone didn’t expect from her- a slow moving haunting ballad instead of a dance club song as her first single. Rihanna is growing as an artist, and it shows very well.
Can’t you feel the pain in the record? Can’t you see how Rihanna is hurting. Listen to the song a few times in a row. It touches your heart…..pull the trigger… I know how it feels to be in a relationship with hurt and pain…don’t you?
Rihanna hurts just like everyone else, and when you’re hurt, you dont want to dance- she’s just not in that state of mind. Her marketing team and label did an excellent job of helping Rihanna grow, not stifling her by putting out a dance reord as the first single….
Watch her perform this song live— and watch closely– some tears will form in her eyes— because they did in mine!!! All I could think about was the photos of beaten Rihanna when I heard this…..it really sad. I wonder what Chris Brown thinks of the song.

I stopped listening to the track after the chorus. It’s boring and musically uninspired. Her vocals, the lyrics…. nothing special at all. This single will flop BIG TIME.

Loving it! Listened to it several times already – very infectious. I do think she’s gonna pull a beyonce and release 2 singles at once. She was shooting a video for an uptempo song last week.

TJ I saw your tweet about Chris going for the same old vs Rihanna going for growth, and I beg to differ. Transform ya is a dance track but there is nothing like it on the radio. Chris is a DANCER/ENTERTAINER so I think it was best for him to hit with a dance track and a video that will be out of this world. All of the best dancers made us dance album after album. The ballad also works for and was smart for Rihanna! They are both evolving and being the best for what they individually do. Just let them both be great because I think they are both slaying!!

This song is sad and boring for a 21 years old that is beautiful and talented like Rihanna. I didn’t mind a ballad eventhough I was looking for a unique and retro song like disturbia or umbrella. It was very disturbing, Im assuming she was referring to a relationship abou how she feels ( unfaithful much)? I am a huge fan of Rihanna’s, and I was just looking for a inspirational ballad or a dance song to show her growth from the ugly fight with Chris Brown. Im cringing just to see her new music video. I hope that the album will more different than this song.
