New Music: Chris Brown – Crawl

Chris Brown promised his return to music would consist of two singles: his Swizz Beatz-produced, Lil Wayne-featured hit “I Can Transform Ya” and a ballad (although he tweeted “ballet.” Oh, Christopher!) called “Crawl.”
I’ll admit it, I was a bit disappointed by “I Can Transform Ya.” Not that it didn’t totally make me want to get up and dance, as any good CB single guarantees to do, but I didn’t see it as a representation of growth from his last studio effort, 2007’s Exclusive, to his forthcoming album, Graffiti, currently estimated to debut in early 2010.
“Crawl” changes all of that. It takes CB above and beyond his strictly R&B chart counterparts and back into the race with the crossover superstars. “Everybody sees it’s you/I’m the one that lost the view/Everybody says we’re through/I hope you haven’t said it too,” Chris opens the song, excreting the emotions of his heartbroken soul.
Brown’s voice soars over the powerful chorus: “If we crawl til we can walk again/then we’ll run until we’re strong enough to jump…so lets crawl back to love.”
There’s no doubt “Crawl” is a hit. When talent meets a song this incredible, there’s no way turmoil can keep him down. Call it a comeback — Chris Brown’s officially back.

i would like to beg to differ on ICTY..its nothing like what chris has done before..actually it took him to a different level hence initially many if his fans did not like it because they did not understand it..it was a different chris..some to this day still dnt like it..for me it represented a chris who was willing to try out something different and it worked.
now when it comes to crawl, that is something you would expect from chris brown..his voice though has matured coz to be honest when i heard the demo i was a little afraid for him..it represents growth for me only when it comes to the voice and how he delivered it coz initially i felt it would be too big for him but i was wrong..well done breezy and i am so in love with it!!! i like the man he is developing into and this is a smash!!!…

I agree this is a great POP song – I however detest the fact that to be a GREAT RnB artist, you have to ‘cross over’. That is exactly why today we have NO great RnB. The love of one of the purest, most heartfelt music genre’s has been given up for the sake of cross over money. It’s sad and it’s even sadder when someone like the writer of this article, makes it sound like it’s BETTER to be a cross over artist, rather than a true RnB artist. Chris went straight to number one with Run IT and he’s never had a better song( No Air possibly, but you could hear the RnB in that).
“Crossover” doesn’t necessarily mean better, and it’s definitely not what I meant by writing it, but it most certainly means your audience is broader. That’s been the goal for Chris and his team since day one with “Run It,” and they want it even more for his return. They don’t want to see him just pull in good numbers on the R&B/Hip Hop chart. They want him high on the Hot 100 and pop charts. This song will put him there for sure.

Here’s the hater. I hate this song. It’s no where near as good as Rihanna’s and releasing a day after hers seems to be an act of desperation to counter that song’s impact. Rihanna’s song is much more of an event.
Also, it infuriates me to hear this swan song coming from a domestic abuser. Isn’t this the type of shit that every woman in an abusive relationship hears to woo them back in before it all begins again?
He should have waited until next year to release an album, and slowly guested on songs. This is a disaster.
