It’s independence day for Solange Knowles.
Beyonce’s uber-talented little sister has announced her split from Geffen/Interscope records today (October 31) via Twitter.
“Although it’s been a wonderful journey & experience at Interscope Records, after truly recognizing what’s important to ME as an artist, I decided it was time for me to continue my path on a more independent platform,” the 23-year-old singer/songwriter tweeted.
“I thank Ron [Fair] and Jimmy [Iovine] for believing in me as an artist and supporting my journey…and have nothing but respect for the Interscope family.”
Solange, who released only one album under Interscope Records, 2008’s Sol-Angel and the Hadley Street Dreams, will continue to make music, but says it will be “fun” to be free from boundaries.
“I’m excited about continuing to dive in, experiment and creating music and art with no boundaries, fears or expectations.”
In April of this year, it was widely rumored that Solange was dropped from the label after the disappointing sales of Dreams.
“Geffen did a one-off deal with Music World Entertainment for Solange and wasn’t interested in doing a new contract with her,” a source told AOL Black Voices columnist Jawn Murray. “People at the label really liked working with her because other than her infamous news outburst in Las Vegas, she was a constant professional. There were challenges dealing with her camp, but Solange was great to work with. In the end, the CD didn’t sell despite Solange’s countless high profile appearances.”
Solange and her manager and father, Mathew Knowles, denied the allegations.
