Great review, TJ! And I agree that those looking for GGGB2 may be disappointed, but only at first. Once you set aside the expectation that she would just xerox her last album, you realize this is a different beast altogether. It’s a Hip Hop/Rock blend filtered through a pop lens. It’s not dancefloor pop, but there are enough catchy hooks to satisfy. Besides, trying to duplicate your last great album can be perilous and leave you with egg all over your face. Just look at Mariah and E=MC2.

I agree that “Photographs” is totally Fergie, but it’s my favorite song on the album. It’s so haunting and ethereal. Besides, Fergie probably would’ve ruined it by oversinging and giving it a banshee howl or two. Rihanna’s vocals treat the song with the delicacy it deserves.

Besides, for those who complain about Rated R shouldn’t fret. You KNOW there’s gonna be a re-release.

Can’t get into Firebomb. I always get halfway through then turn it off cos’ I can’t bear it anymore. I could also do without G4L, easiy the most pretentios song on the album. That said, Russian Roulette, Rude Boy and Cold Case Love are the standouts of the album. Cold Case Love in particular is moody and hauntingly beautiful. JT is clearly very good for Rihanna.

Trust me, Fire Bomb is my favorite! But as you can see, I had already gotten beyond wordy. :) May do a separate feature just to praise Fire Bomb’s sheer amazingness.

I can’t get enough of this album. Can’t believe you didn’t even mention Firebomb, the albums most amazing track (also very radio worthy, super hooky) – and Stupid in Love (Take a Bow part 2) very hot for radio as well.

Rude Boy is good, but I hope it never becomes a single with so many better choices.
