Justin Bieber - My World
The problem with being an artist plucked off sharing mediums like YouTube is that your brand new label home will depend heavily on your video views, good looks and knack for covering a song to launch your career. Very little in terms of actual artist development will come into play. Not a problem for a performer who’s been singing and writing for their entire lives but for Canadian-born teen sensation Justin Bieber, who admits to getting into the biz by accident after taking second place at a school talent show, this appears to be an issue.
His debut album, My World, relies heavily on big named songwriters, fancy beats and the 15-year-old’s clean cut good looks. Vocal immaturity takes over a good bulk of the only 7-track set.
His R&B megastar mentor Usher’s influence is prominent throughout the album. It comes across as very affected, giving Justin no clear identity. Songs like Bigger seem force-fed to the teen. “I was a player when I was little but I’m bigger, I’m bigger/A heartbreaker when I was little but I’m bigger, I’m bigger,†he sings throughout the chorus with little passion, probably because he still is little. The Cardigans’ Lovefool-sampled Love Me is also devoid of passion, sounding vocally robotic.
Justin’s at his best on the more stripped back songs. Down To Earth, the one true ballad on the set, is the only cut that comes across as genuine. “Mommy, you were always somewhere. And Daddy, I live out of town./So tell me how could I ever be normal somehow,†he sings of a broken home. The song embodies all the intensity that is missing from the other tracks.
The good news is, this is his debut album. Artists tend to change as they mature and experiment with music. Hopefully by his sophomore album, Justin’s world will include fewer gimmicks and more development and authenticity.

Im so thankful for this review. I’ve known Justin and his family for years and this review is the first that spoke honesty. I feel his CD is all over the place as well and that they’ve marketed him to the tweens and this is what is selling to them. Down to earth was about his family so thats why there is something behind it.
He has so much talent that soon his label and him will find his groove (I feel more acoustic coming but he loves R&B and will likely stay in the Top 40 genre) his music will only get better. I’m excited!

totally disagree. Every song is a hit, what more can you ask for. Down to earth is heartfelt and amazing but he is singing to his peers. the girls. they love this album in fact it is the best album on the market speaking to their dreams of love. His voice is incredible and i think for a debut this an amazing album for a 15 year old or an adult

Am I the only person on here to completely hate everything about this boy? Really? Well it’s been a long time coming, so here it comes.
Does anyone understand what real music is? By that, I mean real, creative, inspired songwriting? This is none of that. All this is is songs written about stupid tween heartthrob crushes that they know will sell records. He neither feels this way or thinks this way about any of his obsessive fan base who he will neither get with, or consider for longer than it takes for them to buy his merchandise.
The CD, if you can call it that, is a massive musical dump. All it is is auto-tuned vocals with horrible backing music I could write in my sleep, melody and all. The only reason why I don’t write music like that, is because it’s not music. It’s garbage, pure and simple. Standard progressions with unimaginative song format. I am sick of stupid pop singers like this one, with no musical talent, getting popular ONLY because they are promoted and funded by larger sources; whereas real struggling musicians with real talent will never get noticed because of their lack of funding. It makes me sick. As a musician, I am offended by anything that brings this person success as a “musician.”
Oh I’m not done, so don’t you think of scrolling down. You know what I wouldn’t mind so much? If he wasn’t so idolized. Stop putting this child and corporate puppet with no talent on a pedestal. Also, stop funding him. Stop making a movie about him. Stop the fact he has a book about him. Go look at the real talented musicians that are alive in the world, struggling day by day to get buy because they devote so much of their passion and time to music. GO. GET. A. LIFE. Now. Stop your idolatry. You’re making the human race look bad.
Now amidst all this, I will say he’s not a bad singer. NO he is not good, just a bit average. His vocal range is pretty narrow and typical, and he lacks intensity or real impact. Everything else about him though is a travesty.
