Interview Bits: 12 Random Questions With Jason DeRulo

Jason DeRulo - Warner Bros. Records

If you haven’t heard Jason DeRulo‘s smash single “Whatcha Say” yet you either really hate pop music, or you’ve been living under a rock. A big pop music hating rock.

The 20-year-old singer from Florida exploded onto the scene thanks to the help of producer JR Rotem, singer/songwriter and American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, and one clever Imogen Heap sample.

Whatcha Say? You want to get to know more about Jason? We did, too. We already know he has one chart topper under his belt, he’ll be joining Lady GaGa on tour, and his next single, “In My Head,” is as infectious as the first. When we got the chance to chat with him we prodded him for answers to questions like who he’d have a dance-off with, if he’s ever been unfaithful like his No. 1 single says, and what topic he’d write a song about with GaGa.

The answers to these questions and more can be found in Neon Limelight‘s 12 random questions with Jason DeRulo!

1. Your title is singer, but you’re also a great dancer. Which one of your singer/dancer peers would you love to have a dance off with?

[Laughs] Umm… I’d like to have a dance-off with Adam Sandler.

Dude! He’s not a singer or dancer!

I know! [Laughs]

2. Your brother inspired the story behind “Whatcha Say,” but have you ever been unfaithful in a relationship?

Me, myself? No. I’ve been cheated on before and I know how heart-wrenching that is, so no. I’ve never done that before.

3. You’ve spent a lot of time in Miami, LA and New York. Which city has the best girls?

They’re just different. I love all kinds of women. Like in Miami you get a lot of Latin flavor. In LA you have your actresses and New York is a whole variety. I just love women so much, so all three cities are just amazing.

4. Have you ever gone to your Wikipedia page to see if something crazy has been written about you?

“Jason DeRulo. European pop star.” [Laughs] Yeah. All the time. People change it all the time and it gets pretty weird.

5. If you could write a song with or for Lady GaGa, what would it be about?

[Long pause] A one night stand.

6. You’re starting to meet a lot of people in the industry. Have you bumped into someone that you admired at first, but was a total jerk in person?

No, actually, I haven’t ran into that yet.

7. If you could pick any female singer to be the leading lady in your next video, who would it be?

Lady GaGa.

8. What’s the longest relationship you’ve ever been in?

Five years. Wait — let’s make that four.

9. You studied a lot of musical theatre growing up. If you could make your Broadway debut, what show would it be in?

“Ragtime.” It’s my favorite musical. It’s about different racial groups and the struggles each group had. It’s just a really great story. Lots of high energy, lots of singing, a lot of dancing. It’s just really a cool show. I definitely want to do that.

10. If you could join the cast of any current TV show, which would you choose?

I don’t know many TV shows. It could be a new or old one?

Current, so something on TV now.

I don’t watch too much TV. Could you name some?

Well, I think you’d be awesome on Glee.

I don’t know what that is.

What!? You’ve never seen Glee!?

I don’t watch TV to be honest.

OK.. Pick an old show…

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air! [Laughs]

11. What’s the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received?

Definitely have to be “Whatcha Say” being No. 1 for four weeks in a row was the best.

12. What do you want people to say about you 10 years from now?

I would like people to say that Jason DeRulo is one of the biggest philanthropists that ever walked the face of the music industry. I’d also like them to say I was one of the hardest workers.

What about “Grammy winner”?

That’s not that important to me. If it happens it would be cool, it would be awesome. But my biggest thing is having my fans really connect to me and having my fans really enjoy my music, and doing what I can for the world. I want to do my part to change the world. Grammys are great, and being number one was great, but the fact that I get fan mail from people saying my songs help them through hard times… stuff like that mean so much more to me.
