John Mayer took his Twitter apology for his explosive comments in an interview with Playboy — which included dropping a racial slur and graphically dissecting his sexual relationship with Jessica Simpson openly with the magazine — one step further by taking a break during his concert last night (February 10) in Nashville to apologize face to face with his fans.
In an almost 5-minute long speech, Mayer says in his “quest to be clever” he “completely forgot about the people that I love and the people that love me.”
He says his tactics developed as a way to slither out of what he perceived as constant persecution from the media. It soon became his “arrogant” way to hide from himself. “If I just continue to be speedy and witty,” he said, “and pull together as many fast phrases as I could, that I could be clever enough to buy myself another day without thinking that anybody would ever finally pin me down and say, ‘You’re a creep.’… I should have just given that up and played the guitar a little more.”
At points during his speech, Mayer was overcome with emotion, especially when speaking of his band playing with him on tour. “I think it’s important for you to know that everybody on this stage is not here because they condone what I say in any given interview, and certainly not in the interview that’s made the rounds today… They’re on this stage because they support myself as a possible future grown up and maybe they see something that I haven’t looked at in a while.”
“Maybe I need to take a break from trying to be clever and just spend a little time looking at what they see,” he said tearfully. “It’s just not worth being clever. I quit. I quit the media games. I’m done… I just wanna play my guitar.”
