PETA is rolling out its annual “worst dressed” list, and some of music’s brightest are in line to receive their “dishonors.”
Jennifer Lopez, Aretha Franklin, Rihanna, and Jessica Simpson are among the musicians PETA.org calls out for “making the red carpet blood red,” as noted in the press release.
Their comments about the singers were none too kind. Describing Jennifer Lopez, PETA wrote, “She looks like Jenny from the butcher block in her old-school corpse coats.”
Rihanna is treated with a bit more compassion, but PETA applies a major guilt trip, lamenting the assault the pop star suffered last year. “You’d think that being a victim of violence would have opened Rihanna’s heart to the suffering of others—like the animals who were beaten, drowned, or electrocuted for her fur coats,” they wrote. “Girl, you’ve got beautiful eyes: Use them to see the pain and suffering that your wardrobe causes.”
Franklin gets compared to Bigfoot in her fur coats (“Finally: footage proving that Bigfoot really does exist!”), and Simpson’s career as of late is taunted (“Jessica’s jacket, bag, and shoes all resemble her career—dead”).

Let PeTA provide a list of AVMA certified farms that beat, electrocute, or skin alive their animals. If these things are happening as they claim, then why won’t they turn over the names of the farms to the AVMA and have their certification revoked?

They could have been vintage coats that were years old, when it was more acceptable to wear fur. To many people, the difference is that most cows that are used for leather are also used for food. It’s the idea that we’re at least using all that we can from the animal, as opposed to skinning it and leaving the rest.

Why is she “awesome”? What has she done to lessen the suffering of animals or anyone else for that matter? Her fashion sense is cruel. Peta is trying to stop animal cruelty. But every year millions of animals get put on fur farms and killed for their fur. Sometimes they put the animal to sleep , other times they shock the animal, and other times they give the animal a drug so it has a heart-attack and dies. And do you know what they do to cows on dairy farms? The torture the cows, they shock them, beat them, they even left a cow with two broken back legs lay there for a whole day in pain. Yes you people might say “oh they are just cows!” , But what if that was you? What if you were that poor cow with two broken legs, and just left in the hot sun all day with no food or water? Taking a animals fur and killing the animal is just as bad as what they do to cows on dairy farms.

Ok first off yea I think everyone has the right to wear what they want. And I don’t believe that if you are killing an animal for food is wrong. BUT its the way that they are killing most of these animals that is pretty messed up. Skinning a animal ALIVE and after you skin it it is still ALIVE with out its fur and skin, that’s disgusting and doesn’t it cause the skinner more trouble when the animal is alive and moving around ? Its like they want the animals to feel pain. I personally eat meat but I wouldn’t wear fur. And I don’t see anything wrong with using animals for food or using their fur for warmth, but not the way it is being done, when they could so easily be put out of their misery before any of the pain begins. And PETA DOES go to these farms but they can’t just tell them to stop and expect them to listen. I believe what PETA is doing is trying to attack popular figures because they want to draw attention to the subject, and they won’t draw any attention being nice. So just like the celebrities have the right to wear the coats PETA has the right to talk shit about it even if they are going a bit overboard sometimes.

I don’t think a more moronic organization exists than PETA. Some of their most high-profile supporters include: Sarah Jessica Parker, Alec Baldwin, and Pam Anderson – three people who have never offered anything beneficial or productive to society (except for some decent humor ala Alec Baldwin). Who has come out against PETA? – multiple former Nobel Prize winnners, the NAACP, Mothers Against Drunk Driving to a name a few. PETA has funded terrorist organizations, individuals indicted for attempted murder, and a compaign the somehow tried ot logically compare animal suffering to the suffering of Jewish people during the Holocaust. This organization is an absolute joke and anybody who supports it is just as pathetic and stupid.
Your analysis of Peta as an organization is extremely superficial. Celebrities are merely the flashy hooks to grab your attention which it apparently has done very successfully.
Once an individuals attention is caught Peta uses logical arguments presented in classical syllogist form – premise + premise = conclusion.
Eg. 1. Unnecessary suffering is wrong 2. Factory farming causes unnecessary suffering 3. Therefore, factory farming is wrong.
Of course the debate becomes about the “Is – Ought” problem, but only if one claims that (1) unnecessary suffering is not wrong or (2) factory farming does not cause unnecessary suffering can the conclusion (3) be wrong.
At the top of Peta you will find the philosophy of Peter Singer, Bruce Friedrichs, Michale P. Rodman, Jeanne Roush, and Ingrid E. Newkirk, as well as a dedicated team of scientists and lawyers.
Peta’s knowledge and research on the subject, as well as their transparency and ability to present facts along with their claims is why the law, judges, politicians, and the world are awakening to the damage we are doing to ourselves, the environment, and the poor and hungry by treating animals so poorly.
I invite anyone to do their own research and prove otherwise.

It was necessary for survival to wear fur thousands of years ago, it is not necessary anymore. To say I need to wear fur to survive today is false and leads to what Hume calls a contradiction. Believing that the future will be the same as the past is a serious error. Only roughly 20 years ago there was no internet, iPhone, Twitter, Blogging, wireless data transfer, HD 3D TV’s, etc, etc, etc. It is impossible for the past to be the same as the future.

HOW CAN WE GET A GROUP TO EVEN START WITH THAT, WHICH I THINK IS THE FRIST AND BIGGEST CONCERN HERE? I LOVE ANIMALS THEY CAN NOT PROTECT AND BEAR ARMS. THEY CAN NOT EAT IF WE DO NOT FEED THEM, THEY ARE DEFENSELESS UNLESS US, AS HUMANS PROTECT THEM. WE CAN PROTECT THE ANIMALS GOD GAVE US AND SHOULD. DANG I PULL DRYING UP WORMS OFF THE PAVEMENT AND TOSS THEM INTO WET GRASS. GOD HAS MADE SO MANY DIFFEENT PEOPLE AND PERSONALITIES! WE HAVE TO DO WHAT WE BELIEVE IS FAIR AND RIGHT USING THE LAW TO GUIDE US. STARTING WITH WHAT WE TEACH AND DEMONSTRATE TO OUR YOUNGER POPULATION. If it wasn’t for fur America my have never been founded in the way it was. These fur bearing animals were put on this earth for that purpose their fur.
If animals were put on this earth exclusively for their fur, why bother giving them a brain, and the ability to feel? Just to make them suffer? What kind of god would want that? There are SO many good causes on this Earth. Animals need a voice, just like Children do. PETA is being a voice for Animals. There are plenty of groups that lobby against Child Predators. I don’t understand why people think that just because PETA cares about animals, they don’t care about Humans too?! Can’t people care aboout more than one thing? I am a HUGE animal lover and Vegetarian. I am disgusted by people killing animals for fur. BUT, I also gave money to Hait. I recycle. I walk and ride my bike as much as I can, instead of using my car. I volunteer at a Food Pantry that feeds the homeless. So, just because I care deeply about animals, as does PETA…it does NOT mean we don’t care for humans. It is possible to care about many things.

Yes, but knowledge, (ie. empirical evidence, non-attitudinal descriptive statements are not.) There is a difference between having a belief (or strong opinion) about something and having knowledge about something.
When I stick a knife into you or an animal it bleeds, it screams, it winces in pain. Of course we are unable to verify the ’subjective’ experience, or ‘relative’ experience (as you mention) of pain but the animal reacts in the same way you or I would, so we must assume pain is being felt at the same level as you or I feel it. Like when a piglet is torn away from it’s mother, the mother reacts violently and becomes extremely stressed, followed by extreme depression and sadness after losing its baby. Judging by its external and observable actions It is feeling the same thing as you or I would if someone harmed one of our loved ones.
Even then, I have no idea how you “feel” or subjectively experience the pain. How to measure one’s subjective experience of pain is currently impossible. It is merely recorded as electrical impulses interpreted by the brain. It is easier for us to “imagine” another humans feeling pain because we are human – we can easily place ourselves in another person’s shoes and think, “well if I feel pain when ‘X’ happens then they must feel it also. So we conclude doing ‘x’ to another human is wrong. We cannot prove they feel the same as we do, we can only assume. It is more difficult, and takes a more awakened mind, to place ourselves in other creatures shoes, and understanding that inflicting ‘x’ (pain) is wrong on, not only our fellow human beings, but on all creatures with a central nervous system. I say “with a central nervous system” because of the recent debate about the word ’sentient’. As plants are ’sentient’ beings and so meat supporters argue that we hurt plants also, so we (vegans) should not eat plants either if we follow our own advice. This is ridiculous as we have to eat, and it is still the lesser of two evils when compared to meat. Plants are fed to animals and then the animals are eaten, thus under utilitarianism, and this ridiculous meat supporter argument against vegans, it still cause less pain to the world to eat a plant-based diet than an animal one. Anyways, we still have problems even placing ourselves in other humans shoes, especially if they are from a different race, culture, religion, gender, etc. so it does take a worldcentric view, not an ethnocentric or egocentric one, to become a vegan. Or to avoid the all or nothing scenario, I would be happy if people merely reduced their meat intake to once or twice a week. They would still be benefiting themselves, the environment, and animals, by reducing their meat intake. I do understand that some people cannot become full vegetarians or vegans.
I take the stand that animals, and other living creatures feel pain more intensely than we (humans) do, based on the fact that they have heightened senses. Thomas Nagel’s article on what it’s like to be a bat delves deeper into this subject and the problem of subjective experiences or “qualia” as neuroscientists or philosophers like David Chalmers refer to them as.
