4 Tracks You Need To Know From Chris Brown’s Mixtape, “In My Zone”

Chris Brown - In My Zone

Chris Brown‘s vow to offer his fans as much music as possible continues with the Valentine’s Day release of his mixtape, “In My Zone.”

Information about the project stayed under wraps for awhile, but when tidbits finally came out, “In My Zone” was said to be a collection of 32 tracks — some new, some takes on other artists’ hit songs — that would showcase Breezy’s ability to musically glide from the grimiest street bangers to the poppiest dance club tunes.

It’s now available for download, and it’s not exactly as promised. Without even listening to the set, the most noticeable change is the number of songs on it. It’s been cut down considerably to only 21 cuts. The overall direction of the project changed as well. Pop music is nowhere to be found. Instead, the set focuses on being a “Rhythm & Streets” assemblage. Fine, but this should be reflected in the mixtape’s intro. (Brown open’s the set by saying, “We gotta do it real big. R&B, pop, the whole nine.”)

Fans of Breezy’s pop workouts will surely be disappointed, but that’s not to say they still can’t find something they’ll like. Out of the 21 tracks — some smooth, sexy and good, others loud, ridiculous and bad — here are four we think you have to check out.

1. Too Freaky – Listen

“Too Freaky” encompasses everything “Rhythm & Streets” stands for. Chris lets his inner bad boy out to party in a major way by rapping and singing over the simmering beat. Of course he’s at his best when he’s singing. Here, it’s a seductive croon. “I will take you down if you let me do it,” he sings. But his rap flow is pretty decent  — even if he’s just talking about his “long money” and his long –uh, yeah. That’s where the over 21 age warning comes in.

2. Work Wit It – Listen

Breezy’s time spent in the Caribbean (…) has obviously had a lasting effect. On “Work Wit It” he mixes some island themes (including a fake Jamaican accent) with the ever popular jerk movement for an instant winner sure to rack up spins in the clubs.

3. No Bullsh*t – Listen

You so rarely hear a shout out to safe sex in these bedroom themed songs, but Breezy is the responsible love-maker. “Reach up in that dresser to where them condoms is” — never said he was the poster-child for proper grammar. Minor butchering of the English language aside, the rest of the song is a sexy slow ride from that early morning call for loving to the steamy act, which apparently lasts “all night.” No BS.

4. Medusa – Listen

On “Medusa,” Breezy has his young life changed by a beautiful temptress he likens to the mythical creature who could turn people into stone with one eye-to-eye lock. “I call her Medusa/She the type of her that seduce ya/She the type of girl that’ll turn you into stone/Look her in the eyes and you can’t leave her alone.” This must be a good thing. Breezy is so taken with his Medusa in this summery ballad that he believes his “player days are demolished.”

Love it and agree! These are the faves on the entire tape, along with I Invented Head. Totally agree with this review. While it was a valiant effort on the mixtape front, I’m looking forward to a real promo push of the fabulousness that is Graffiti.

    • CBForeva says:

Im waiting for that Graffiti push too cause that album is too good to go to waste. Those are my favorite songs along with Turnt Up and the song Perfume he did with Se7en of Rich Girl. The whole mixtape is hot. I still want the song “She Can Get It” but it’s cool cause the whole mixtape is really good.

  2. Anony says:

Ditto. Glow In The Dark too is worth mentioning.

Glow in the Dark is old though. Was recorded early last year

      • tee says:

Actully glow in the dark is from 2008.It was suppose to be on his second cd.

Love the whole mixtape.Im glad it wasnt any pop songs, only because graffiti has a lot of pop songs and I wanted something different.I love both the mixtape and the album and I think they just show how talented he is.Also I love when chris plays around with different accents.Hes been doing that for a long time im just glad it put it in a few songs now

I love the mixtape and let’s not forget this is his 1st attempt and as such to have received so much hype and favor on a first effort is GREAT!!! keep doing your thing Breezy and showing these haters that you can’t be confined to a box, your talent and skillz are to many.

  5. BR33ZY REAL FAN says:

omg im lovin ALL DA SONG AND HIS Jamaican accent IT SOUND BARE REALLY ALWAYS THERE ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS HATERS OUT THERE WELL THEY CAN ALL GO 2 HELL!!! WELL DONE BR33ZY KEEP UP DA GREAT WORK GOD BLESS YA!!!!

  6. florida_girl says:

I think Perfume should be released as a single, I know this is a mixtape but that song would do great on the airwaves.

  7. tmj says:

I have to disagree that there are no pop songs. “Turnt Up” is definitely a pop song that would have went well on Graffiti. I don’t know what caused the changes in the number of songs on the mixtape but I am not disappointed. Songs like “Back Out” and “Sex” are so good that they should have been withheld for an official album.

I think Chris went “hood” on this album and it was wise for him to do so because I think his urban audience/radio stations have been more forgiving than the pop audience/radio stations.

  8. tmj says:

I echo everyone who says Graffiti still deserve some promotional love. I totally love the video for Crawl but I NEEEEEEEDDDD a video for Pass Out or Sing Like Me. He has so many dope songs (I’ll Go, Movie, Wait, Brown Skin Girl, Take My Time) on Graffiti and it just breaks my heart to not give those songs airplay.

I really hope his appearances on Naomi’s Fashion for Relief runway show and his performance at the BET SOS Haiti concert will open up doors for him to really show off this talent and this album.

    • CBreezy says:

OMG Every song you named are my faves so I agree with the Graffiti promotion. This mixtape was so HOT and he did songs that were so good that couldve been saved for an album. But I guess that’s how good he is at his work cause he doesnt disappoints. He went all in for this mixtape.
Breezy betta work! Keep ya head up boy!

    • noodles says:

I love every song on Graffiti and I can’t wait to see a video for pass out! But wait that is my song! He should make a video for that after sing like me and pass out! Because him and trey songz are so sexy sp that would already make people watch it and lets not forget the game. I love that song. Graffiti deserves more promotion though it is a great album so fuck the haters. And the mixtape was hot 2 its all I’ve been listening to since sunday!

  9. Terry says:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE ‘No Bullshit’! I got it on repeat. Overall great mixtape

  10. Mel says:

I believe POP songs wouldn’t mesh well with these. So I can understand why there wasn’t any. Plus the R&B/Hip Hop alone is great on the mixtape.

Love “No Bullsh*t” to the fullest. That’s my joint.

I totally agree “Graffiti” deserves a lot more than what it’s gone. That album to me is his best out of the previous ones. Even above “Exclusives” hard to believe because hat album was just great. But to me “Graffiti” is all around growth that’s why I love it.

  11. shakeera says:

I looooooooooove Madusa!!!! You forgot to mention Invented Head, Perfume, Sex and Say Ah!!! Chris did his thing on the mix tape!

  12. Caroline says:

My fave songs on the mixtape are “turnt up, sex, work wit it, TYA, and How low can you go. But I love them all. I have been listening to only this mixtape on my ipod since Sunday. Great job, Breezy!!

  13. Caroline says:

Also hope Chris releases a mixtape of the “pop” songs. I love that on Graffiti he did more than “Hip Hop& R&B”. I love that he ventures into pop music as well.

  14. victoria says:

Surprised you didnt mention “I invented head” that’s the best one! The mixtape was better then I expected to be. The songs grow on you quickly….

  15. chianne says:

Really love this thing, love Graffitti too (where are the videos?). Is this mixtape getting a lot of attention? its ‘out there’? That’s what my digital wiz friend is telling me. Seems like there are a lot of good reviews (beyond the unconditional love thats always on his fan sites.)

Anyway his vocals, his energy make the tape a killer. Glad you could bust out of that straightjacket you were in last year Chris – have fun! do YOU!Keep makin’ that Great music.

  16. jasmine says:

I absolutely love this mixtape. I hope that it’s getting noticed. Medusa, Invented Head, Too Freaky, Glow In The Dark and Big Booty Judy are just some of my favorites. He totally went in on this. I agree that Grafitti should’ve gotten more attention, the promotion on that album sucked cuz it was a great album. Chris doesn’t disappoint me ever. I just hope people would stop talking about that Rihanna incident and talk about his music. Love it, love it, love!
