New Music: Drake Releases Long-Awaited First Single, “Over”

Drake - Complex.com

As details about Drake‘s first single made its way to the internet, anticipation among fans and critics grew. What would the song sound like? Would it be just as good as previous hit singles Forever and Best I Ever Had? Would all the hype from the past year effect his musical outcome? The answers to those questions, of course, depend on your feelings about the rising rapper.

Over, the official first single from Drake’s debut album Thank Me Later, was released to the internet today (March 4) and quickly created an enormous amount of buzz. That buzz, filled with opinions from fans and haters alike, was mixed.

“Over gets better with every listen,” one fan said on micro-blogging website, Twitter. Another wasn’t as enthusiastic about the song: “That new #drake is lame. Honestly f*ck this new hip pop.”

On the new track, Drake’s formula is much like his mentor, Lil Wayne: deliver some insane one-liners. “‘Bout to go Thriller, Mike Jackson on these n—–s/All I need’s a f-ckin’ red jacket with some zippers.” But punch lines and a hard beat may not be enough to sell the song, especially as your very first official single. Drake seems to be losing his identity some. This single could easily be a Lil Wayne throw away.

Take a listen and see what you think.

My fears have become reality. I downloaded So Far Gone the night it was released and this “Young Money Drake” will sell more and make more money than the pre-YM Drake but the lyrical quality has gone to $hit

I think his music is good and the fact that he can sing and not just rap puts a refreshing dimension to his music…much like what Bran Nu is trying to do as well. It’s all down to personal opinion in the end i guess, but taking into consideration that he has far more fans than haters means he’s doin something right. Gwaan do yuh ting mi boss.

I love Drakes music videos for these hot rap songs too they are awesome and some of the best rap & hip hop music videos of 2010. Because hes such a great performer and really brings the songs to life in his rap music videos. Hes definitely had an amazing year and im sure will have an even better year in 2011.
