Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens - FOX
American Idol got all shook up this week with an Elvis theme night and a double elimination that would bring the top nine down to lucky number seven.
Luck was definitely on Michael Lynche aka Big Mike’s side this week. Last week, the judges cashed in their sole save to keep him in the competition, and as the rules go, two singers had to go last night. Not Mike. His tender performance of “In The Ghetto” proved to the judges and voters why rescuing him was a good decision. But with Michael out of the hot seat, other singers’ short-comings winded up being their down falls.
Young father Andrew Garcia, who struggled to get out of the gargantuan shadow of his Hollywood week performance of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up,” was eliminated early in the show Wednesday night. His cheesy take on “Hound Dog” was panned by the judges, but just as coolly as he took the criticism Tuesday, he took his elimination. “I’m glad I’ve been through what I been through,” he said smiling, almost as if he knew he’d be going home.
17-year-old Katie Stevens also struggled during the competition. She was constantly told by the judges to young it up and stop being so old fashioned. Simon Cowell and Kara DioGuardi had debates almost weekly about where Katie should go musically; Kara thought more pop/R&B, while Simon favored the country route. Katie went more blues Tuesday with “Baby, What Do You Want Me To Do.” While the judges liked her vocal performance, they were left a bit empty overall.
So was America. Stevens was the second to get the boot. Like Garcia, Katie took the news graciously, telling Ryan Seacrest that when she tells people about her time on Idol she’ll mention “the amazing people I met and the amazing experience this was.”
The remaining seven contestants will perform inspirational songs next Tuesday under the guidance of Alicia Keys.

It was sad that they are both gone now but I think we can all agree that Andrew and Katie didn’t have a real chance of making it to the end. I think down the road though that Katie will still be successful because she’s young and just need to find her style. I’m not saying I don’t think Andrew is bad, I’ve been hard on him but his Paula Abdul cover is still one of the best performances this season, if he can capture that again, he’ll be amazing. um yea they did have real chances of making it to the end…they were both really good and talented
I wish they had another save because Katie shouldn’t have been eliminated! I am glad she made it to the top 12 and will go on tour. She is fabulous and I know she will make it either way.

OMG. Katie and Andrew shouldn’t be eliminated. They’re like few of the best kids in the show.
I think CRYSTAL BOWERSUCKS should have been eliminated. And so does that Casey guy.
This makes me and my family don’t really like this season.
Oh yea you got that right!
I disagree, those two are total bubble-gum music – Casey & Crystal have true talent and soul in their voices. There’s enough teeny-bop crap out there already.
I agree with you 100%. Crystal is by far the best singer of the entire group. This is a singing contest not a popularity contest. Also, I am very disgusted and disturbed by all the negative comments that are written re: Crystal’s Hair, her lack of pesonality, her paleness and discolored teeth. She is a juvinile diabetic and is prone to all of these maladys. It is amazing that she can compete on her level with this insidious disease.
As a parent of a juvenile diabetic from the age of five,I can sympathize with what she must be going thru. My child had all of her problems, in which bloggers are nasty about. She also had a heart attack in her twenties and a massive strok in her thirties and is partially paralyzed but handling the situation terrificly.
So all you bashers of Crystal, lay off and be thankful that you have your health and not her uncertain future. It is amazing that she can compete as she does.
I am also upset that the judges used their only save for Michael Lynche. He is only an adequate singer and a big blowhard and ego maniac. He relies on the sympathy vote for being a new father and used it to the hilt.
Had he been eliminated Katie would still be in the competition and the save could have been used for someone more talented and worthy, should it have been necessary. Now we run the risk of a truly good performer eg. Crystal, Siobhan, Lee etc. being eliminated if they don’t get the votes. Also, re: Big Mike.. WHAT IS HE DOING IN THIS COMPETITION-ACCORDING TO MEMOS AND NEWSPAPER ARTICLES IN JANUARY HE WAS DISQUALIFIED BECAUSE HIS DAD HAD BLURTED HIS BEING CHOSEN AS A TWELVE FINALIST BEFORE IDOL HAD MADE IT PUBLIC. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND SINCE HE WAS DISQUALIFIED WHY HE IS EVEN IN THE COMPETITION. Last year an Idol contestant was disqualified and never was reinstated and she had far more talent than Mike. I am beginning to get suspicious of this whole thing. Anyway I hope that Crystal has the stamina and health to last thru this entire series as she is the best. I have noticed the past few weeks that she has had bronchial problems, which is another side affect of Juvenile diabetes.
I think that Crystal is the best performer by far of the Idol Group this year. I also am very disturbed and disgusted by some of the bloggers who infer that her hair is a mess, has no personality and has discolored teeth. If you were a juvenile diabetic like she is, you would have all of these traits as these are side affects from this insidious disease, including paleness and chronic bronchial problems.
As a parant of a juvenile diabetic since she was five years of age, I know what she is going through physically. You never know from one moment or one day to the next when you will have a problem. I think that it is fantastic that she is performing at the level she is with all the problems she must face every day. My child had a heart attach in her twenties and a massive stroke in her thirties, which has left her partially paralyzed. She is in her forties and doing very well. So please knock it off re: Crystal’s personality and hygiene negatives. We are fortunate to have such a great performer on Idol. I only hope that she stays healthy enough to be OK thru the entire show and not be hospitalized again.
As far as the save for Michael, I am upset that the judges used their only save to protect this guy. He is, in my opinion, full of himself and should have been eliminated earlier. Also, I had read, prior to the announcing of the 12 finalists, that he had been disqualified as his father had announced his becoming a finalist prior to the announcement by Idol. I don’t know how he got reinstated. WHAT IS HE DOING ON THE SHOW SINCE HE WAS DISQUALIFIED? There are several other idol contestants I felt were as good as he, but didn’t have the personal story of becoming a father and all that other stuff. Also, by giving him this save, it eliminates saves for any of the other remaining idol contextants all of whom would be more worthy. eg: Crystal, Siobhan, Lee etc. It would be a tragedy if any of these three got eliminated prior to the semi-final as they definitely should have been considered worthy of the save.
I wanted so much to see her make it to the top 10. Once she made it there, I wanted to see her make it to the top 5. I was so impressed with her natural pure talent, and I knew that over time and with coaching, she would shine like the star she is. I think she has still made her dream come true. She is going on tour and will be snatched up quickly by some talent scout. Good job, Katie! I am so proud of what you accomplished . You not making it to the top 5 wasn’t for lack of talent or trying.
I think andrew garcia and Katie should have stayed!
Good choices, I still think 16 is way too young to be in the competition, it should start at 18.
A series of national studies conducted among 8,110 American Idol viewers revealed that the elimination of contestant Katie Stevens during the show’s elimination last night did not accurately reflect the viewers’ choice. Aaron Kelly and Andrew Garcia were rated as most likely to be eliminated by viewers. The study parallels American Idol voting to determine the weekly winners based on a democratic, “one person, one vote” methodology.

Katie Stevens has the best sounding voice from a tonal quality standpoint in the competition.
