You don’t have to win American Idol to be the best Idol ever.
According to the results of a poll conducted by Billboard.com, season 7 runner-up David Archuleta is the “best American Idol ever.”
The 19-year-old crooner, who released his debut album in 2008, first beat out a few of Idol’s most memorable male contestants like Adam Lambert, David Cook, Clay Aiken, and Taylor Hicks, before going head-to-head with Carrie Underwood, who won the most votes for the best female American Idol ever.
Archuleta snatched up a staggering 92% of the votes from Underwood to claim the title.
Archie took his big win with a dose of humility, telling Billboard.com he finds the results “really flattering.” “I guess the fans I have are just really supportive. I think it’s cool that people consider me their favorite,” he said. “It’s crazy. Carrie’s just so successful. She’s sold millions and millions of albums and she has a great voice and a great personality.”
Archie fans have more than this poll to be excited about. Archie has been in the studio hard at work on the follow-up to his debut album and plans to release a single in the summer with the album following in the fall.
Give me a break! Archuleta has barely sold a quarter of the albums that his archrival David Cook did. This is a meaningless poll driven by twitchy-fingered tweens who spend all day online. That the article is obliged to mention and compare Archuleta to Underwood and Lambert indicates who the real superstars are. Underwood is miles away the greatest success of all AI alumni while Lambert is the AI series champion and legend in the making.
They are talented to, but David is awesome and talented guy. We voted for him. David won cause he is much loved. :)
I think David got people that have nothing to do.. in the and what matters is who sell, and sorry, I have no idea of who David is this days.. But it is nice for him..at least he got that..
Strange word.. yesterday, again, .. not the real Idol that won the game.. makes me wonder if American Idol is that clean… or they do something behind the door.. At least this year, second runner Lee, has a real good voice, not made of idol material yet, but he can do very well.. pity we did not get to see Adam last night.. I missed him.. that was a real treat!

If most are like me I have lots to do. I am a full time nursing student and I also work full time. I took a little time to vote for David every day. :) I think it’s awesome that two years later David has dedicated fans that are willing to take the time to vote and support him. He is soon to release his new single in July and his next album is due to release in the fall. Sorry Adam didn’t make it and you were disappointed. I am sure he is hard at work and maybe you will get to catch him at one of his concerts. :)

They’re now about even although Archie’s album’s been out for a 18 months vs. 6 months for Adam, who hasn’t even begun his big tour–which will undoubtedly make his album reach platinum before Archie’s (after all it’s no longer fresh). WDYWFM climed into the Billboard Top 10–a big comeback for Adam after offending most of the public with his risque AMA performance. Adam’s concert tour tickets are among the hottest on the market right now, with some being scalped for as high as $6,000 a piece. Adam’rising; Archie’s peaked (just look at the dismal sales of his second album).
Adam has had so much success, even though he was honest about being gay before he even had a record out. If David Archuleta ever comes out of the closet I think his career will be pretty much over, just like Clay Aiken’s. Neither one of them has the looks, talent, great personality or honesty that Adam has. Adam will always have a successful career in music.

This can not be an actual poll. I mean hello, I love Archie and all but he is no Adam. If I would have known about this I would have voted for Adam for sure. But the proof is in the album sales and ticket sales and well Adam is doing far better than last years winner (who was that again?) oh yea Kris. His album topped out at #12 and has been going down ever since. Kris’ tour is not doing well and Archie is not even on tour. His first album has only sold like 100,000 more copies and its been out for 2 years. And Adam’s first tour for which he is HEADLINING is selling out in minutes. So I laugh at this “poll”
While I do agree that Adam is one of the best and one of the fastest rising stars in the industry, I’d be best if we don’t put the other Idols down. Yes, Adam is “on a league of his own”, but let’s at least congratulate the dedicated/passionate Archie-fans for their hard work. I’m sure that many of the other Idol’s fans weren’t aware of the poll so it’s kind of inacutate. But it’s just an poll. Music awards & longevity are the real deal.

Please folks, let David Archuleta’s fans have this bone. They’re not the only fans who do power-voting. Think about VH1 Top 20, for example, and a certain person’s video (whom and which I LOVE) that’s been either top 5 or top 10 for the past three months because “WE” vote for it week after week. So, we all do the same thing for the singers we like. But it does ruffle my feathers to think that Billboard would actually let folks run up the vote on something like “best Idol ever” when we know there are many other Idols who are far more successful than David A. And doesn’t success begets best or vice versa?

For the record, David had many headlining sold-out shows when his debut album came out in 2008 and 2009. He went Asia countries and UK for tours and still devoted international fans tweet him to come back to their countries. His Christmas album sold 210,000 only for 2 months, and earned 2.2 million last year solely without any endorsements. As you may know, Crush has sold 2,000,000 units. This young man is everything Idol should be; his conducts, clean image, purity, sincerity and respect for others regardless of social class, race and any barriers.
man, please. archie makes lambert look ridiculous in sales, and just looking at the numbers. if archie was as overpimped and overhypeed as lambert, he would have sold multi platinum. david has smoked adam’s ass in cd sales, single sales, and in just all around popularity and. there is no poll or contest where these two have gone head to head and the lamberts have won. david has maintained and grown his base since idol, and they are as passionate about him today as they were then. adam has had 100x the exposure and hype, but why has he not outsold archuleta… why does it take so many bites at the apple to sell adam to a public that doesn’t want him. and you have the nerve to try to throw shade on archuleta – he has done nothing to you, and this is not a battle any of you want to start. adam’s failure when compared to david cook and other idols has been bad. the press hasn’t begun to look at how archuleta is kicking his butt too. don’t start none, want be none.
Get your facts straight. Archuleta’s debut album is only gold despite being out 18 months. Its sales have stalled and pretty much maxed out while Lambert’s debut album sales continue to climb and is nearing platinum; it will exceed that goal by tour’s end (It’s already platinum in several other countries). In terms of single hits, Kris and Adam have been dominating the last few months along with top AI alumni like Underwood, Daughtery, Cook, Clarkson, etc. Archie is second tier and fading. The only ass Archie is kicking is his fans’ brains.
adam’s album is treading water, selling at 6-7k/week, with just 655k in us sales. he is a long way to platinum honey. what a bad fan you are – can’t relay accurate facts about him, or is this just part and parcel of the lies, damn lies you all spread around to make him look better than he is.
adam’s cd by all rights should be multi-platinum by now. he had 100x the promo david did – if david has a tenth of the hype and promo from idol and the propping up adam has had, he would be in the stratosphere now. but he sold his cd off nothing but his hard work, and name. and still outsold adam. adam is talented, but no matter how much you go around braying and boasting, you can’t force him into being a superstar when none of the facts bear this out.

Too much junk to comment on so just a few to illustrate: Cook broke a record by having 11 singles at one time on the billboard top 100, unmatched by any other American Idol alumni. Adam’s WDYWFM was Billboard #10 earlier this month and reached platinum as a single; it’s been the leading Idol single for several weeks now according to Billboard. Kris’ single reached platinum over a month ago and still doing well. Adam’s and Kris’ next newest singles just out are starting to pick up steam. Archuleta has no single charting and will have nothing to catch Kris or Adam this summer.
who gives a flip where this album is platinum at in the world – it’s the us where he needs to show he can attain platinum, and make it. sales thresholds for cd’s are lower, sometime much lower internationally, so anyone with reasonable promo, or even miniscule promo there can be certified gold or platinum. that is not huge feat, nor anything to go bandying around as a sign of sucess, lololol… it’s where labels go to inflate sales, and add artifical cred to an artists ability to sell when they can’t sell their stuff well enough in the united states. selling well and doing well in america trumps anywhere else. maybe he needs to keep pushing himself internationally to find an audience that wants to hear him. keep telling yourself what you must, we’re gonna keep supporting our guy, while haters and others gnash their teeth.
Yes, selling well in America is important, but you have your facts totally wrong about going gold in other countries. The number of records you sell is in proportion to the number of people in the country. A GOLD record is an equal GOLD record where ever you are.

Not being a Billboard follower I had no way of knowing about it or I would have voted for ADAM! When was it held & how did everyone hear about it? it was no secret – adam’s fans were promoting it on their boards and on twitter, carrie fans were too – all idol fans knew about this poll if they were online any length of time. it was posted on goggle, yahoo, aol, all over the web, so no one in the idol online community can plead ignorance. billboard had links to the poll everywhere. when david defeated adam in the best male idol poll, the comment section at billboard was overrun with lambert fans, so they we well aware of it. david’s fans just voted more – why is that so hard to understand for people. this was no clandestine operation carried out and made known to a select few – it was open, well publicized, and everyone had an equal and level playing field in which to vote for who they felt was the best. and david’s fans just voted more. you can’t win them all, david’s fans know that. you lose, you just move on, and try to be as gracious doing it as you can.

I’m sure Archuleta’s “team” HIRED people to do nothing but sit around and vote all day…I mean, really, there aren’t many summer jobs out there for teeny-boppers these days! Carrie and her fans are too busy helping Nashville and Adam and his fans are concentrating on his upcoming Glam Nation tour AND they just don’t care at all about anything American Idull anymore!

I know no one can SERIOUSLY complain that Carrie lost? Just because she’s been more successful doesn’t mean David fans can’t vote in full force. Before you start saying that stuff remember this. Carrie just did the same thing at the ACM awards. Carrie is placed at #10 on the forbes country artist list yet she beat every artist in voting for ACM ETOTY and they earned 3 times more money then her (she beat #1, Kenny Chesney, #2 Toby Keith and #3 Taylor swift all of them earned 45 million plus) plus Taylor Swift is currently on an album that has sold 5.8 million vs. Carries current album which has sold 1.5 million. So sometimes people with larger numbers sometimes lose in the fan vote. I guess they have something to prove. But congratulations David you certainly aren’t the only one winning over the more “financially” successful artists.
David does have a dedicated fanbase of all ages and I am sure that other idols have dedicated fanbases, also. We believe in our chosen idol (David), just as you believe in yours. It funny how a poll does not count when the others idols do not win, but counts when they do. Billboard made no secret of this poll. It was open to all to vote. David has not had as much promotion as Lambert, yet he has become very successful,nonetheless. His talent and artistry is appealing to all age groups. He is a world idol. He would never berate another individual nor begrudge them any accolades that they or their fans may obtain for them. Based on fair voting by his very dedicated fans, David James Archuleta is the Best Idol of all times. Just as we are happy for Adams success and do not begrudge or berate him, please do the same for David.
All I know is that David is a singer/celebrity who is worthy of all the best things that come his way because he is one amazing person on top of being a
talented artist without hype, glam attire or fiery techno back-up..He is still a simple guy with no pretension. And him beating up Carrie and the rest of the idols? Hah, sorry, sourgrapes, support your idols more next time.

Obviously Archuleta’s fans are dedicated to supporting him — they clearly wanted him to win this poll. Why fans of other Idols have become affronted by this, I have no idea. Seriously, Adam fans? The same dedicated fans who call and request him nonstop to show your support, who vote in many online polls to keep his name out there, — none of which I have a problem with. So why are certain people who are commenting here railing on about multiple votes and people sitting around voting all day? Pot, meet kettle.

I think it’s great that both Lambert and Archuleta have such a dedicated and mobilized fanbase. That kind of support is necessary to survive the current state of the music industry — something that both gentlemen are doing with great success.

To be fair, let’s say that most lambert fans are good too. Everybody has a few bad fans here and there. Let’s be happy for Archie’s win. Hopefully we can win it again for Archie next time.

You know David said it best……”I guess the fans I have are just really supportive.” The poll was open for anyone and everyone to vote. Anyhow Adam L. has been on every show imaginable(and I mean everything), Oprah, Music Awards (LOL), and even was the first ever AI contestant Mentor. Kris was the winner and he got none of this. And still Adam doesn’t come close to selling what he should be selling for all this hype…he would never have sold what he did if it wasn’t for all he was promoted. I have never seen any artist promoted like he was, but I think RCA realized if he was going to sell anything they had to dish out the money and Adam did too. A lot of that promotion came out of his profits. How long can he keep up that? When the money runs out for promotion he will run out….

Wow, reading these comments, I have to say Archuleta has the ugliest and the most rabid fans of all. They have to bash the other idols to make their idol look better. Carrie, David Cook, Daughtry, and Adam are all talented. I wish them much success. No, my favorite idol is none of them. I just had to say it from a bystander’s point of view.
it’s not ugly – it’s tired of having kindness mistaken for weakness… it was the ugliness of the adam fans that started this. if they didn’t have anything nice to say, then they had no business saying anything at all. they think they can run over any and everybody. wrong. david’s fans have taken a lot of shyte from various corners over the years, and they are standing up for him and themselves the best way they can. they don’t invade message boards of other artists and spew the crap these scourges do. they don’t hold onto bitterness and anger over not winning, and use that anger to deliberately try to sabotage others. lamberts do. they need to be exposed for the scum they are, and i guarantee they will not come out smelling like a rose. push anyone far enough, and they will respond. just wait until your fave artist is in their sites. then come back and talk to us, and the allen fans, and cook fans.
I must have gotten a blister on my finger when I voted for David Archuleta during the finals because I’ve always been a fan of David A. You see, I have this rare ability to like Adam Lambert, David Archuleta, David Cook, Carrie, Kimberley Locke, and a bunch of other Idols all at the SAME time. If it was any other poll except Billboard, I don’t think anyone would give a rat’s a$$ how many polls David A. wins. But Billboard is a biggie and I don’t think too many people think of David A. as being the best idol of all time. Forget about Adam for a moment. What about Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, and Chris Daughtry. David A. (and Adam) have a long way to go before he matches their “kind” of success. So, the title of best Idol ever just doesn’t fit him right now –in “my” opinion.
For the same reason, I still don’t understand why Adam was the mentor on Idol before Kelly, Carrie and Daughtry who are respectful idols. It’s obvious AI is desperate to change the image of Adam from the one who ruined his opportunity by disgustingly simulating sex on stage to a nice & acceptable guy. I am an Idol fan and a “bystander” myself and I too have my favorite who has not been mentioned here. But it redeeming to me to see that fans are just
as mean about other Idol contestants as they have been to mine. I guess there

How did Jenn read these comments and come to the conclusion that David’s fans are the ugliest????? Glamberts once again went on the attack with baseless facts and David’s fans responded. Many people like me liked Adam until his fan base became nauseating. They seem to have difficulty with numbers like record sales (David has more than Adam in cds and singles plus radio airlplay according to THIS original Billboard article!). Forbes has also just printed the top 10 Idol money-makers from last year in which David is #8 at 2.2M. Adam has NOT made the top 10 even after the mega promotion and just coming off of the show. David has >370,000 followers on twitter. If only 10% voted ONCE that’s 37,000 votes for David. Lambert’s fans were aware of the Male vote here as per the tweets from his fanbase. Could it be that most of America is sick of Lambert (note: it was just tweeted that his AI finale performance was cancelled by Idol). and btw, congrats to David on the win.

Also, talking $$$ how do you compare someone annual income when one Alum has 6 months of earnings(and an album only out 1month) and the other has 12 months. I am a CPA and I find the math a bit funny. Is this what they call new math?

using that criteria, when forbes compiled their formula last year, how did david make it on, with that six month window as you say… he made it his first year out, with less promo, less exposure than adam… what does that tell you… he worked his tail off, and earned what he got. last year, and this year, so your adam excuse doesn’t wash. adam couldn’t even get past kris, who has had less promotion than he. and no one can take the high road in any of this, but the record shows once again which group polluted the environment with their ugliness, hate, rude behavior. can’t expect to go around starting mess and thinking people are going to roll over and take it. in the end, who cares – the poll is over, the results are in, they’ve been logged. nothing will change that, so why even bother being upset….

look guys I’m a lambert fan, and we can’t control the BSC fans, any more than you can. They are a small, but loud percentage. They don’t speak for all of us. I’ll be the first to say, we are tired of polls, they pit him in some poll every day against somebody, and we are just tired of it.
In every fandom there are different types of fans, in every one, I’ve seen so much rudeness it is unbelievable. Look at all comments including “fans” themselves, I wish I could remove the 10%,of crazy people online in every fandom, but we can’t perform miracles.

Yeesh! What’s up with all the hate? I don’t like archie or carrie’s music very much, so I don’t listen. And I don’t care for polls like this either. You can’t ask a bunch of kids to vote on who the best idol ever is. They’re all different! What’s considered good music to some may be totally different to others. Like, in my opinion, Adam lambert is the hero of American idol. But what about country fans? Of course they’re not going to vote for a pop rock singer over a country singer, no matter how much of a talent gap there is. Same goes for archie. Sure, Adam fans can be ugly sometimes. But all you archuleta fans, do you really think that counter-bashing is innocent? We can all be ugly when defending our favorite artists, but do we really have to be ugly when arguing over who’s uglier? I respect that archuleta won this. I may disagree, but he won. It doesn’t matter who sat at the computer longest, who clicked more times, and who saw it or didn’t see it. I highly doubt that a little insignificant poll and article will at all affect the popularity of any of these innocent people that are being bashed without justification. Can’t we all take Adam’s advice and grow up a little?

- he’s met Madonna and interviewed at the Grammys’s.
- His album sold 500,000 the first week it came out, right AFTER his scandalous AMA performence
- He got to sing the theme song for the movie 2012.
- He collaborated with Lady Gaga, Muse, Linda Perry, P!nk, Ryan Tedder ( from One Repulic )!
- He has made three music videos, and the forth coming out in 3-4 weeks
and all this in LESS than a year!
What Archie has achieved from his career isn’t nearly as much as what Adam has! It’s true , and Adam is all about love and peace and that’s what makes him so much bigger and better than Archie.

And Archie’s not a mere “runner up”? And why wouldn’t Archie have made more money than Kris and Adam? He has a year head start. He’s been out 18 months while Kris and Adam have only been out 6 months. Why hasn’t Archie made 3x as much as Kris or Adam? Because he’s not better. Adam’s almost caught up with Archie in sales despite shooting himself in the foot at the AMA show. Now he’s winning converts from people who had written him off. When things are more even time wise, say, 4 years for Archie and 3 years for Kris and Adam (instead of a 3:1 advantage) you’ll see that both Kris and Adam are bigger stars than Archie. The trajectory is not looking good for your boy even without waiting.

The reason this article has the title it does is because whoever wrote it knows it’s ridiculous for Archuleta to be named Best Idol Ever over Adam Lambert and Carrie Underwood.

I think everyone should chill a bit. It’s just a poll. Two-three weeks ago Billboard showed who were the most successful Idols based on album and track sales and airplay. Of course Carrie and Kelly were on top of that list, not unexpected since they have been around years longer and had more albums and singles, etc. than more recent Idols. The top 10 also included Jennifer Hudson, Daughtry, David Cook (in I think 6th place) and David Archuleta in 8th place which I thought was pretty impressive since it’s only 2 years since the Davids finished the Idol tour and starting releasing their own post-Idol material. They were all in the Top 10 most successful Idols. Then Billboard took the top 12 women and top 12 men and had two separate polls which they called “Best Idol” but obviously people vote their favorite. David Archuleta is my favorite (and I am an adult). And BTW Archangel – One quarter of Cook’s sales? David Archuleta’s first album sold about 2/3 what Cook sold. But Archuleta also had a Christmas album in late 2009 and those sales count towards his total album sales, putting his total also over 1 million albums sold. His first single Crush is closing in on 2 million. And he has very loyal fans.

Your’re right about Achuleta being a better singer than Bieber. Bieber’s obviously more popular but that kid relies on an autotuner to cover up his pitchiness. Archie and Adam can sing live without a crutch. I asked a friend who is an expert vocalist and former professional opera singer to evaluate several AI alumni. Evaluation: (1) Archuleta is an outstanding singer–better than Cook or Allen, for example–and has almost flawless technique except for breath control (gulps air in a noticeable way); (2) Lambert not only has flawless vocal technique but an acoustic acrobat with extraordinary range and power. On another note, both Adam and David A. have lots of followers on Twitter: David is ranked #405 and Adam is ranked #343 IN THE WORLD (they are separated by about 100,000 followers). The two of them are way ahead of all other AI alumni when it comes to TwitterPower.

I definitely agree! Adam’s the best…& he does not need a poll like this to validate how good he is. I’m still battling to get a ticket to one of his concerts close to my hometown. Tickets to his concerts are sold out within 30 minutes of the announcement of his concerts, & I would give anything to watch him in concert!!!

I’d just like to say that I’m from Australia and I’ve never even heard of this David Archuleta which makes me seriously doubt the valitdity of this poll. Since I don’t even know a thing about him, I’m finding it hard to believe that Archuleta could be the ‘best american idol ever’. Actually , the only Idol mentioned in this article with any success in Australia is Adam Lambert who’s being played on the radio non stop right now.
Congrats to him. His voice is a little . . . um . . . dull for me, but it’s pleasant. Glad Underwood didn’t win though. She’s tiresome.
