Video: Chris Brown Performs Emotional Michael Jackson Tribute At The 2010 BET Awards

Chris Brown

After delivering a rather shabby tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, at last year’s awards show, BET knew they had to deliver a show-stopper for 2010. The producers tapped arguably the only current male performer who could do MJ justice: embattled pop/r&b star Chris Brown.

Before performing, Chris expressed just how nervous he was to honor his hero but you couldn’t see the nerves when the 21-year-old hit the stage. Dressed in signature MJ fashion, the talented singer/dancer performed the live, stripped down version of The Way You Make Me Feel.

Dance breaks for Remember The Time, Smooth Criminal and Billie Jean followed. Chris even had Michael’s ground-breaking moonwalk down.

It wasn’t until Chris was faced with performing Man In The Mirror did his nerves–and emotions–come out. Visibly shaken, Brown began the song but as it progressed, he was barely able to get the lyrics out through tears.

Crying and all, Chris Brown managed to give one of the best Michael Jackson tributes since the King of Pop’s shocking death a year ago.

CHRIS BROWN’S PERFORMANCE ON BET WAS HORRIBLE! I CAN’T BELIEVE THE JACKSON FAMILY AND BET ALLOWED BROWN -THE WOMAN ABUSER- PERFORM IN MICHAEL JACKSON’S HONOR.

    • All Grown Up says:

Why there always got to be someone negative that always has something to say??? Tell me one damn thing were you there to see what the hell happened between Chris and Rhianna. No, so the fact is stop freakin bashing. Damn, and if he did do it, who’s to say he can’t change. Come on hell think about it half of the stuff we regular people do ain’t right and we hate it when people bash us. It’s time to forgive and forget and this is coming from a woman who knows what abuse is and has experienced it first hand. I mean, truth be known, Chris is awesome and he delivered as MJ always did so much in his performance. It was a performance that will live on for a lifetime and that mess with him and Rhi is behind him now, so I suggest you do the same. Suppose you all haters wasn’t forgiven for what you did, you would be in a pool of hell right now. Besides the performance had nothing to do with Chris’ life it was about honoring MJ.

    • babygirl says:

The only thing that would make your judgment about Chris Brown valid or even relevant is if you were the person at Heaven’s gate that decides who gets in or not. You seem like nothing but a hater that has nothing better to do than be negative and try to bring people down. What is it that you are doing that is so great to make any type of judgment? I’m sure you didn’t have anything to say about Tommy Lee or Eminem who both performed on BET last night and who have both been known for beating their wives but you don’t have any negative comments about them being woman beaters. Is it because they are white or do you have to be a married celebrity for people to overlook your behavior? Is that racism or hipocricy or is it both? You need to get a life and think about what your’re doing that God would think is so great before you judge someone else. I’m sure you’ve done something that you would want God to forgive you for so what makes you worthy of forgiveness and not the next man? Get over it and get a life!!!! You should be asking for God’s forgiveness for being judgmental because if you didn’t know that is a sin because ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE!!!!!

    • Anonymous says:

You are a total idiot, sitting in judgement without an ounce of forgiveness. Who appointed you God; and are you being held to the same standards you are holding Chris to?

  7. Redeemed says:

Chris Brown did a wonderful job. How dare anyone question his talent or his right to share that talent with the world in honor of one of the greatest performers of all time. I recall how many stones were thrown at Michael Jackson. Now, some of those same stone-throwers realize what an amazing gift Michael shared with all of us who were willing to partake. Did he have flaws? Of course…as do I and everyone I’ve encountered in this world. For those of you who are flawless, however, continue casting your stones. I choose to forgive and allow a talented young spirit an opportunity at redemption.

    • Kaylee says:

I agree completely! People who are saying that this was a publicity stunt are absolutely ridiculous. Did anyone stop to think that maybe he broke down because he realized he was chosen because of his talent to honor one his idols and inspiration? Lay off the kid, he made one mistake! He has apologized numerous times! Just because he made one poor decision does not mean he needs to stop using his talent. He was chosen to honor Michael Jackson because of just that, his talent.

  8. commentor says:

CAN U SAY PUBLICITY STUNT? FAKE TEARS AND IMITATING MICHAEL JACKSON FOR A CAREER BOOST IS SHAMEFUL AND EMBARASSING.WHAT BAD ACTING AND SINGING AND THE PERFORMANCE WAS BORING.EMINEM KILLED IT AS DID JEEZY.CRY ME A RIVER-BUT MAKE IT BELIEVABLE.

  9. PUBLICITY STUNT says:

PLEASE STOP USING GOD TO DEFEND THIS UNREMORSEFUL WOMAN BEATER. HE WASN’T CRYING FOR MICHAEL JACKSON-HE WAS CRYING FOR HIS CAREER.BOO HOO HOO-PLEASE HELP MY CAREER. TOO FUNNY.

  10. noodles says:

    @PUBLICITY STUNT and @Commentor
Your comments look real dumb right about now. Publicity stunt well he is a damn good actor I guess. Come on now we all know from Michael(May he Rest In Peace) who said he admired Chris’s talent and from Chris who never once hesitated to say who inspired him to do music this was no publicity stunt. Just because your mad cuz the crowd embraced him and helped him through the song and cheered him on instead of booing him or something like you were probably hoping you shouldn’t question someones emotions. And how was he crying for his career? When Chris accepted his fan award and after his trubute with the crowd cheering every minute you haters shouldn’t worry about his career lol. And he did this for a career boost? Maybe you should check his other award show performances(this topped them all) he always honored Michael even back when no one cared to do so! You haters are damn right the Jackson family allowed this and introduced him and loved it! Call him what you want lol this was amazing!

I have to completeley agree with this article. Tears and all Chris gave like the best Michael tribute! I know Michael is smiling down on Chris and is pleased! He did better then dare I sya Usher could have done(who cried when giving a MJ tribute last year also…cuz Michael was that great)! And don’t forget to mention the Fan Award to top off his amazing night! He owned that stage! Who ever says this sucks or has negative things to say needs a life lol. Go find me someone(in fact I would like to see some of you do it) who does it better and get them to go on stage in front of all those people with millions of viewers….go ahead i’ll wait….oh wait the only other male artist who can is gone. RIP MICHAEL JACKSON!

    • mary says:

you know wat i will admit i hated chris brown for wat he did to rihanna but i cant believe people wud think he did this for a stunt to boots his career is cruel and mean i for one will also admit chris brown has always said and perfromed his love for michael jackson shyt i cry when i see MJ’S music video so thank you for ur post and comment this perfromance was amazing and well done i will gve chris his respect he did awsome GOOD JOB CHRIS MICHAEL IS LOOKIN DWN AND SAYING GOOD JOB WELL DONE BOY….

  11. Xadax says:

now he’s guilty? I mean just right now, in front of millions of people watching… good thing there wasn’t any Russian Roulette baby! BWAHAHAHAHAHA

  12. CANDY says:

@noodle well spoken. some people think they are perfect but i guess they are probably the worst people u can ever come across.yes chris did a horrible thing which i don’t condure it either but that doesn’t mean we should make him an out cast among us.This is history repeatng it self again some people are waiting for him to die before recognizing his talent. That performance was great and he deserves the praise.Everyone deserves a second chance in life so get a life u losers n haters!!forgive and you shall be forgiven just incase you have not read your bible in awhile.GOOD JOB CHRIS OUR LORD WILL DELIVER YOU FROM YOUR ENEMIES!!!!!!

    • noodles says:

Exactly. These people swear they are perfect. I doubt they could find me someone to get on the stage and do a great job like Chris did….they wouldn’t even do it themeselves so pay props when they are due. They are trynna rain on Chris and his fans parade after such a good show but it isn’t working on me I’m proud of Chris. And why weren’t people talking about when Usher cried at the Michael Jackson’s funeral thing last year? I mean is Usher a punk too? No of course not cuz we only hate Chris Brown well newsflash the song Man In The Mirror might mean more to him then you think and to be doing a long overdue tribute to your idol…thats amazing…some people just have to hate on him to make themeselves feel better its not working this time…not anymore lol.

  13. #TeamBREEZY says:

I agree with noodles & the other positive comments written above . Fans like myself have had Chris Brown’s back since Day1 ! He is truely talented & has a way with music & if you guys (HATERS) cant see that then why the hell are you commenting? Makes no sense to me , except the fact that you must have enjoyed the performance as much as I DID ! ! ! You go chris , TEAM BREEZY for eternity ! <33333 . . .Shoot had me crying for a minute . . do yo thang we right behind you . ;D

  14. Wiz Khalfia says:

Youngin on his grind…youngin on his grind. All bout da paper coz da youngin on his grind!

  15. amischris says:

i agree with noodles and it really takes alot out of you to cry on stage i cried as well when i saw him crying i think i have an idea about how he felt i love chris til death he took my best performance for the night

  16. Marten says:

Total publicity stunt. Singing cuz he feels bad for himself. He’s no Michael Jackson. And since when do we give props to anyone performer for not pulling their emotions together to at list sing one line. If the dopes on American Idol can do it, so can he.

    PLOY.

  17. Nekeya says:

God is about to unleash some blessings in chris browns life that he is not going to have room enough to recieve. Get ready chris! And for those who judged him, God seen it all so he will take care of them. Let he who is with sin cast the first stone, and none of us are without sin so no one had no right to judge that y…oung man, now look at God working his situation out right infront of our eyes. You go Jesus! And for the people posting bad comments about chris, take a look back over your life and remember the things you ever did wrong, and ask yourself didnt i want forgiveness for this? Alright then, what if you did something and people would never forgive you nomatter what you did? Yes i understand his tears, i think the song ment more to him than we could ever imagine,it was personal to him, and he couldnt hold it in. I mean come on i even get emotional when listening to MJ songs, because they have real life meaning to them, and they really speak to you, unlike alot of these artist today, MJ songs were about life and feelings, and they were deep songs, and i think chris saw his situation and just burst out in tears.

  18. noodles says:

Neonlimelight should post the videos of everyone asking the celebs what they thought of the performance and how amazed they were of how well Chris did to shut these fools hating up. You can not tell Chris or his fans how he felt. Thats like me trying to tell you something about yourself when I don’t know you I’m just leaving a comment on a blog. Beside the few haters I have seen who really need Jesus if they can turn this into something negative I see everyone admiring Chris because when he cried they realized what he has been trying to explain and show….he showed he is a human just like the next guy. And seriously if the crying was a stunt he is a wonderful actor lol. And I expect him to get an Oscar for his role in Takers. But seriously you don’t fake shaking and starting to turn red and breaking down. This tribute was in memory of Michael you hateful people are trynna take the focus and put it on Chris and his life. Godbless all. I love this performance tears and all. And I love how everyone is acting like they love Chris right now even Perez Hilton(who hates him).

  19. Baby says:

I’m not even going to read the comments from other ppl! I’m not interested in negativity! CHRIS BROWN WE SALUTE YOU FOR YOUR EPIC PERFORMANCE ON THE BET 2010 AWARD SHOW! Congrats KID you deserve all praise!

  20. Shasta says:

Sorry but I also believe it was a publicity stunt and anyone but his most extreme apologists probably agree. This moron all but destroyed his career through his abusive violent streak. He BEAT UP A WOMAN. HE BEAT UP A WOMAN. He beat her black and blue and bloody. He’s a pathetic excuse for a human being.

Once a beater, always a beater.

    • Whateva says:

as a female, I used to hit my boyfriends when I was around 19, 20. They never hit me back either cause at that time I would have called the police. Being young MINDED, I didn’t realize I was abusing them until my ex told me after we broke up. At that point, I realized its not right for anyone to put their hands on another person and I haven’t since. Does that mean I will always be a man beater? Cause I for one made the decision to change for myself. I don’t see why Chris can’t at such a young age. Unlike some REPEAT white abusers that no one seems to care about and STILL support, just sayin……

    • Whateva says:

and another thing, how could it be a publicity stunt a year and a half later? At this point, you either support him or you don’t. Any apology or crying didn’t change your mind so why would it change others? If you cut that hate around your heart you will see that he paid tribute to his idol and the song itself “Man in the Mirror” was moving to him on all levels. He couldn’t stop crying and why should he if that’s what he was feeling? Don’t you go to church? Don’t you hear something that makes you want to cry and even though you’re in public you try to hold it back, but cant? What he did was wrong, but I dont’ ever remember him not accepting responsibility and that’s all he should do and learn from it. He she never let his mistakes define him, period. We all can’t be walking hypocrites like yourself though. *shrugs*

  21. When I Was Sifted says:

Amen Chris, Bad to the Bone!! MJ is smiling from heaven. You almost do him as good as he did, and that is BAD!!!!! Congrats on an amazing comeback in all areas. I always knew you would. Now your haters, keep being successful and do your “thang.” It is obvious that you have tried to make amends and that is all you can do. Life is a series of challenges, for each that you overcome, you become stronger. That did not kill you, it made you stronger and you will continue to get stronger. “Forget those things that are behind, press on.” Those who have allowed Rhianna to go on with her life, should allow you to do the same. I am almost 50, and to date, I have never seen a perfect person like those who continue to criticize you. I am glad you made your mistake young so that you will learn early and never walk that path again. God bless you brother and I mean supernatural, exponetial overflow. Finally, “Ignore your critics, they will soon go away.” Remember how they tried to crucify MJ. “They might shoot you with your words; and cut you with their eyes; they might kill you with their hatefulness…, but still like the air, You will rise!” Stephcynie’s mom

  22. Nights says:

    good job!

  23. Tonia says:

I don’t think his breakdown was a publicity stunt, I think it was real but it’s a little too late to be crying to the world now.
Everyone knows it’s wrong to hit a woman & if you were brought up the right way – you know that, but it’s not like he even hit/slapped her one time, HE HELD HER DOWN & BEAT THE HELL OUT OF HER & KEPT BEATING HER & those pics prove it. I don’t give a rats ass if she DID ‘provoke’ him or however ya’ll say it. There is NO EXCUSE for him beating her LIKE THAT! For those of you who think like “oh well she had it coming” or “she must have done something to him for him to have done that to her.” Ummm, you need help/therapy if you really think like that & I feel sorry for you. Not that it’s even ok to hit a woman one time but PEOPLE he kept on beating her the way he did! THIS IS NOT OK, can’t you see that??? A man knows his strength is so much more than a woman’s, they know they can hurt a woman so easy & a woman is defenseless.
How could ANY man do this? People aren’t hating or just picking on Chris Brown, it’s the fact of how could he or anybody do something like this to anyone? Think about it guys, what if this were your mother or sisters boyfriend/husband doing something like this to her? Really think about it, I mean someone who not only hit her one time but held her down & beat her to a pulp. You would be so hurt & angry inside & want to kill him, wouldn’t you???!!!!
Chris Brown broke down because he knows he f’d up & at one time the whole world loved him – but they don’t anymore & he knows he’ll never get that back. People can’t get those images of those pictures out of their minds of Rhianna’s bruised, battered face. I think he’s sorry – but for the wrong reasons. He’s not sorry he beat her (because he knew that was wrong before he did it). He’s sorry because he didn’t know he was going to get a big backlash the way he did from the whole world where everyone hated him & would no longer buy his music. Some stores even refused to put his stuff out on the shelves after this happened. His biggest fans all of a sudden would get sick to their stomachs if they did happen to hear a song of his somehow. He didn’t see any of this coming. He’s sorry alright but not because he beat her but because he got ‘caught’ & people just can’t get over what he did. He’ll never get that respect as an artist/musician back & that’s sad.
To the fella’s who have respect for women, GOD BLESS YOU for who you are, how you think, & what you believe is wrong & right… you know what I’m talking about. To the beautiful ladies, it is NEVER ok for a man to hit you or lay his hands on you. Even if you push him, bite him, hit him, or throw something at him – there’s no excuse for him to retaliate by hitting you or/and especially holding you & beating you! When you’re in the fit of rage there are other ways he can handle you. Now I’m not saying it’s ok to hit a man because IT’S NOT! lol but he can push you back (not hit you-there’s a difference), hold you down & hold your arms (not hold you down & beat you-there’s a difference), hold your legs down (because you know you’re kicking him harder than a MF! lol, he can use his body weight by holding you down but not to hurt you, do you get where I’m coming from? You ladies are beautiful & there is no excuse to ever think it’s ok for a guy to put their hands on you.
For you little thugs (men) out there who dissagree…
You’re going to put your hands on the wrong man’s daughter, sister, or mother & get F’d up bad & I hope you do! I expect to get some ignorant people’s feedback on here from this & I hope I do. It will just show who you are & what a low-life you are & I think too you need to put your full name too where we can all see who you really are! LOL
