Review: Sean Kingston Kicks Off Pre-VMA Concert Weekend In Burnt Out Fashion

Last night (September 9), Sean Kingston helped kick off MTV’s VMA weekend with a special performance sponsored by Verizon at Playhouse nightclub in Hollywood.  Neon Limelight got a chance to join in on the fun, all leading up to Sunday night’s sure-to-be entertaining and unpredictable, live telecast.

As his performance began, Kingston was introduced to the crowd like a king coming into his court.  Unfortunately, he didn’t bring the royalty one would expect from such an honor.  Microphone issues immediately interrupted any pleasure the audience took in watching him perform his radio hit, “Me Love”, produced by J.R. Rotem.  Soon after audio issues were in check, the singer moved on with “Take You There.”  Though accompanied onstage with a three-man entourage (including a bodyguard, DJ, and hype man), Kingston’s energy level was a bit sub-par.  The young artist seemed winded when he first hit the stage and unfortunately, you could barely hear his live vocals while his background track was irritatingly louder than him.  We assume a sound check appointment was skipped.

Kingston cranked out his latest single, “Letting Go (Dutty Love)” from his as-yet-untitled third album.  Unsurprisingly, there was no guest appearance from Nicki Minaj who shares a much welcomed, feature presence on the track.  The evening’s highlight occurred when Kingston asked if any Justin Bieber fans were in the crowd.  The 21 and over audience grew super-hyped at the possibility of the teen singer making a surprise appearance onstage, but were sadly relegated to his vocals only on the backing track of the song, “Eenie Meenie”.

After a club-hyping rendition of Usher’s “O.M.G.”, Kingston sent the crowd off with “Fire Burnin’” just before exiting the stage.  A fitting end for the young artist who, by set’s end, just simply seemed burnt out.  We hope that he takes detailed notes from his peers performing on Sunday’s VMAs.  Maybe then his flame will be reignited.
