Many celebrities have spoken out against teen bullying lately in light of the string of tragic suicides in the news recently. Many of them made videos urging the bullied to stay strong and stick it out because “it gets better.” If the It Gets Better project needs a theme song, Taylor Swift‘s new track “Mean” is the perfect song.
In the song, Taylor calls out a bully from her past who made her feel like nothing with mean words and even physical force. While the bullying is hard to deal with and her bully probably got pushed around and takes the anger out on her, she vows that the cycle would end because she’ll let her future success get the last laugh for her. “Some day I’ll be living in a big ol’ city and all you’re ever gonna be is mean,” she sings on the chorus.
The real stinger comes on the bridge: “I can see you years from now in a bar talking over a football game with that same big loud opinion but nobody’s listening. Washed up and ranting about the same ol’ bitter things. Drunk and rumbling on about how I can’t sing but all you are is mean.”
“Mean” is taken from Taylor’s new album, Speak Now, out October 25.
