Review: Cee-Lo Green And Javier Colon Kick-Off Universal CityWalk’s Plugged In Concert Series

Cee-lo Green - Neon Limelight

Cee-Lo Green recently pulled himself off of Rihanna’s Loud tour as an opening act, but has remained quite busy in spite of leaving such a huge gig.  He was on hand to help to kick off Universal Citywalk’s free summer concert series, “Plugged In,” at its new outdoor venue, 5 Towers, and we were in Universal City, CA last night (July 7) to watch.

Opening up, or rather introducing Cee-Lo before the packed crowd was “The Voice” winner Javier Colon.  The audience went crazy when the smooth voice crooner hit the stage, but we were a bit surprised and admittedly disappointed when Javier left without giving us even a hint of his sweet sound.

Cee-Lo strutted onto the stage dressed comfortably in all black with a sprinkle of bling on his neck and wrists.  He kicked off his set with “Bright Lights, Bigger City.”  Joined by two female backup dancers known as the Wonder Twins, and female disc jockey DJ Rashida, he took the youthful crowd “back to the old school” and performed “I Like It,” and “The One.”  Though moved by the beat-thumping tracks, the crowd seemed to enjoy his more familiar tunes, like the hit he wrote and produced for the PussyCat Dolls, “Don’t Cha,” and the Gnarls Barkley tracks “Crazy” and “Smile Faces.”  He closed the show with his biggest hit to date, “F*ck You,” pleasing the crowd, who couldn’t seem to censor themselves when the chorus came around.

Though Cee Lo’s stage presence left a lot more to be desired, his vocal performance didn’t cease to amaze the crowd as he belted out highs and lows of his past and present tunes effortlessly, reminding the mixed crowd that “Old School” is still pretty fresh.
