Coldplay Cover Rihanna’s “We Found Love” For BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge

Chris Martin of Coldplay - BBC Radio 1

Having made her their only collaboration ever, it’s obvious Coldplay are fans of Rihanna. So when it came to choosing a cover song for their appearance on BBC Radio 1′s Live Lounge, the choice was obvious. The guys selected RiRi’s current hit, the dancey, Calvin Harris-produced “We Found Love.”

But instead of stepping out of their norm and doing “We Found Love” the dance/pop way again, Chris Martin and Co. made the song sound as if they had created it for their new album, Mylo Xyloto. That means they stripped away all of Harris’ synths, added twinkling keys, zippy guitar rifts, and happy drums. And of course, Martin had to throw in a few whimsical high notes for good measure.

We’re not sure yet what Rihanna thinks of Coldplay’s cover, but we kinda dig it. It puts the song in a whole new light. It took Rihanna’s powerful music video for some to see that the song has depth, but stripping it down this way, you get that automatically.

You can hear Coldplay do “We Found Love” below and check out their collaboration with Rihanna, “Princess of China,” on Mylo Xyloto, out now.
