New Music: Nicki Minaj Flies To The Dancefloor On “Starships”

No more teasing from Nicki Minaj. After dropping not one, not two, but three teaser tracks from her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (“Roman In Moscow,” “Stupid Hoe,” and “Roman Holiday,” which she debuted in a jaw-dropping, WTF-inspiring performance at the Grammys on Sunday), the Grammy-nominated rapstress has unleashed the set’s official first single, “Starships.” And, thank you, Sweet Baby Geezus!, it sounds normal. Well, as normal as a Nicki Minaj song can sound with her still switching up voices on a whim.

The track is super ready for pop radio. (Now we know exactly what Nicki meant when she said “Starships” “sounds like a Ryan Seacrest type of record.”) It’s peppy, talks about shaking off all of your cares (one of them being owing that late rent), and taking it to the dancefloor. “Get on the floor, floor like it’s your last chance/If you want more, more, then here I am,” Nicki sings before launching into the chorus. “Starships were meant to fly/Hands up and touch the sky/Can’t stop ’cause we’re so high/Let’s do this one last time.” It’s all set to the tune of an instrumental production that swerves in and out of typical dance-pop to techno, courtesy of RedOne.

We don’t mind getting high aboard Nicki’s “Starships.” Do you? Listen below and find out:
