Months of speculation, and finally there’s confirmation: Adam Lambert will indeed reunite with Queen for a performance this summer.

“As many suspected, I can finally confirm: I have been invited by Queen to sing one very special concert!” the powerhouse singer tweeted today (February 20) “Sonisphere at Knebworth July 7th!”

Lambert, who first performed with Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor during the finale of his season on American Idol, then again in a spectacular medley performance on the 2011 MTV EMAs, isn’t taking the task of performing songs that the incomparable Freddie Mercury made famous lightly. “I’m completely in awe of the Queen phenomenon,” he said in a statement. “The thought of sharing the stage for a full set is so beautifully surreal. I’m honoured to be able to pay my respects to Freddie’s memory. He’s a personal hero of mine and I am deeply grateful for the chance to sing such powerful music for fans of this legendary band.”

The band is confident in the decision to have Lambert front them for this performance. “Judging by my incoming mail, this decision will make a lot of people very happy,” May said. “It’s a worthy challenge for us, and I’m sure Adam would meet with Freddie’s approval!”

Tickets for the Sonisphere Festival, happening July 6-8, begin going on sale on February 23.
