The music world lost a hip hop pioneer yesterday (May 4). Adam Yauch, known by the moniker MCA and as one of the founding members of the legendary hip hop trio the Beastie Boys, died at the age of 47. He had been battling cancer since 2009.
Like many music fans, Coldplay are also in mourning. The guys made time in their concert at the Hollywood Bowl last night to pay tribute to Yauch with a cover of the Beastie Boys classic, “Fight For Your Right.” “We’re sending all our love to the Beastie Boys,” Chris Martin sang at the end of the performance.
Coldplay’s piano-drenched cover of the party classic isn’t a new one. When the Beastie Boys were forced to pull out of the All Points West festival in 2009 due to Yauch’s illness, the guys again showed their love for Yauch by covering the song during their set. (See the throwback performance here.)
