Tony Lucca has 99 problems but stirring up controversy on The Voice doesn’t seem to be one. The popular Team Adam Levine singer and former Mickey Mouse Club star decided to give his take on Jay-Z‘s rap smash “99 Problems” for his finale performance before the show opens votes up to America to select a winner.
Like his standout performance of Britney Spears‘ “Baby One More Time,” Lucca flipped the song around to create something totally new. His cover of the Jay-Z hit was part rock, part pop with a dash of country. All the coaches seemed to enjoy it but a snide remark from fellow MMCer Christina Aguilera wasn’t far away. “Tonight you came here and you know, I know your beautiful wife and your daughter and family are here tonight and I just thought the lyrical connotation was a little derogatory towards women but all in all, it was good fun,” Xtina said.
Tony’s coach Adam tried to clarify the song’s “I got 99 problems but a b*tch ain’t one” lyric saying it was a metaphor for “life getting at you, things bringing you down. We’re not referring to women. We’re referring to everything.” Christina wasn’t totally buying it, bringing up the fact that before that line, the song says “if you’re having girl problems I feel bad for you son.” To smooth the tension over, Adam revealed his glittered “Team Xtina” shirt. No love lost here.
