BET promised to give Whitney Houston a fitting tribute and they did just that during last night’s (July 1) 2012 BET Awards.
The tribute started with words for pop music icon Mariah Carey. Carey detailed how the two singers met and became friends while working together. She became emotional during the end of her speech when she proclaimed “we’ll always have the music.” Moving and emotional musical tributes by Monica, Whitney’s brother Gary Houston and her mother Cissy Houston would follow.
One of the tribute’s glowing moments came from r&b singer Brandy. She performed two of Whitney’s biggest hits: “I’m Your Baby Tonight” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Brandy’s stage presence was flawless and she impressed with a strong vocal performance.
After Whitney’s “Waiting To Exhale” co-stars shared memories and parting words, the tribute came to a close with a performance of “I’m Every Woman” from the legendary Chaka Khan.
Whitney Houston died on February 11, 2012. She was just 48 years old.
