Frank Ocean’s “Channel Orange” Debuts At No. 2 On Billboard 200 Albums Chart

While Zac Brown Band claims the No. 1 spot this week with their new album, it’s the artist at No. 2 that is the real chart story. As expected, Frank Ocean‘s critically-acclaimed new album “channel ORANGE” debuts at the runner-up position with 131,000 copies sold in its first week out according to Nielsen SoundScan as reported by Billboard.com. The album’s final tally is higher than predicted–industry insiders expected the set to sell between 110,000 to 125,000 copies.

Ocean’s strong debut is made even more impressive by the fact that it was achieved with mostly iTunes sales. The album was released one week early following a much buzzed about debut television performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Billboard reports that of his 131,000 albums sold, around 3,000 of them were physical copies. The album was officially released to stores and other online retailers Tuesday (July 17).

Back to the No. 1 spot: Zac Brown Band’s new album “Uncaged” came soaring in at the top slot after selling 234,000 copies in its first week out. The band also experienced a larger than predicted debut after early predictions placed their first week sales around 220,000 copies.
