Alicia Keys promised to give a big performance during the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards and while she did produce some pretty good “surprise” guests, it seemed to fall a bit flat.
The performance started out with Alicia on the keyboard as she performed her new single “Girl On Fire.” A few rough vocal notes later, she cued to Nicki Minaj. Nicki brought some spunk to the performing, delivering her verse with a tough girl stance. When Nicki closed her verse with the line “but I got em aggy ’cause I win the gold like Gabby,” 2012 all-around Olympic gold medalist Gabrielle Douglas appeared on stage as the proverbial girl on fire. She flipped across the stage and met up with AKeys for a high five. The performance was good but not great and suffered from a bit too much hype.
“Girl On Fire” is the title-track of Alicia Keys’ new album. The album is due in stores on November 27. Watch Alicia’s VMAs performance below.
