We’re down to the top six on season three of NBC’s hit singing competition show, The Voice. With so little contestants left, that gave them enough time to perform not once but twice during last night’s (December 3) live performance show.
Some of the singers would desperately need both performances to make an impression on the coaches–Adam Levine, Cee-Lo Green, Blake Shelton and the now teamless Christina Aguilera–while others would completely own each time. Here’s a rundown of what happened when the top six singers from took the stage.
Nicholas David – Team Cee-Lo: Nick gave a feel good performance of Earth, Wind And Fire’s “September” but it definitely wasn’t his best. The best part–the chorus–was given to the background singers. This would have been a good time to show off different parts of his voice (as fill-in coach Pat Monohan from Train advised). Adam agreed but he’s still a fan.
Cassadee Pope – Team Blake: Cassadee gave another awesome performance with a pop/rock version of Racal Flatts’ “Stand.” She stood in the crowd and rocked her little behind off, hitting a fantastic high note in the middle. “Co-coach supporter” Xtina says she’s been won over and gushed over Cass’ “on the money” chops.
Amanda Brown – Team Adam: Kill this Amanda! Amanda came out and completely killed her performance of “Natural Woman,” getting Adam up on his feet when the performance ended. Blake wanted to find something wrong with it but just couldn’t. Adam loved it, calling the performance “awe-inspiring.”
Terry McDermott – Team Blake: Blake’s team is on fire! Terry hit the stage with a stripped down performance of Foreigner’s “I Wanna Know What Love Is” that displayed what a brilliant vocalist he really is. And that last note?! Heavenly! Xtina says after hearing Terry’s performance, she thinks Team Blake is the strongest. Cee-Lo was moved while Adam says he “slayed” it.
Trevin Hunte – Team Cee-Lo: Trevin’s letting go and having fun with “Walking On Sunshine.” It was a fun performance but uber cheesy. Even still, Trevin found moments to let his vocals really soar. Adam was shocked by the song choice but thinks in the end it worked.
Melanie Martinez – Team Adam: Melanie performed a stripped down version of Gnarls Barkley’s smash hit “Crazy”– a risky move because GB is fronted by the genius that is Cee-Lo Green. Xtina thought it was a bit much but she made a great effort at it. Cee-Lo, who may be the only opinion that matters for this specific performance, thought she did a great job.
Terry McDermott – Team Blake: Terry came out and murdered the stage yet again with a flawless performance of “Stay With Me.” Cee-Lo thinks Terry’s “the real thing” while Adam notes his consistency.
Trevin Hunte – Team Cee-Lo: Just when you thought this was going to be another one of those showy but kind of boring renditions of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” Trevin comes in with remarkable high notes and control to make his performance anything but boring. That last note?! Goosebumps! Xtina was completely slayed while Adam says it was one of the best performances on The Voice ever.
Amanda Brown – Team Adam: Amanda’s performance of White Snake’s “Here I Go Again,” was good–great even–but since it was supposed to be the return of a performance like “Dream On,” it came up a little short. It just didn’t have that same magic. Christina loved it and Cee-Lo thought it was a wonderful performance.
Melanie Martinez – Team Adam: What an adorable performance! Melanie and Adam came up with the absolute most cutesy staging to go along with her performance of “The Show” by Lenka. Blake thought it was very different for her but thought she sounded good at least while Xtina was left wanting to see her do something more sultry like a Fiona Apple song.
Cassadee Pope – Team Blake: Cassadee took on one of Avril Lavigne’s best songs ever: “I’m With You.” She completely owned it, taking every opportunity possible to show off her tremendous vocals. Adam loved it and so did her coach Blake. He even thanked her for picking him as her coach. Could we be looking at the winner? Based on both of her performances, we’ll go ahead and say maybe!
Nicholas David – Team Cee-Lo: Nicholas sat at his piano and gave a really soulful performance of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” The arrangement was cool and showed off his unique style perfectly. Adam says he’s “genuinely a fan” while Blake called it “magic.”
