Simon Cowell received the shock of his life when only one of his remaining groups received the news that they made it to the season two X Factor USA finale but it wasn’t the group he bargained for. On last night’s (December 13) live semi-finals results show, girl group Fifth Harmony were the first act to move on to next week’s finals, setting in motion one of the most shocking upsets on the show this season.
Looks of pure shock swept through the stage filled with the remaining top four contestants and their mentors–Britney Spears most notably. The pop singer later said she was disappointed, thinking the groups would go the other way around.
With Fifth Harmony in, that left only Emblem3, L.A. Reid‘s Tate Stevens and Britney Spears’ Carly Rose Sonenclar to receive news of their fate. In reality singing show fashion, the results were dished out in no particular order and in the most suspenseful way possible. Tate got the good news next, leaving Sonenclar and Emblem3 as the last two standing until finally Carly was sent to safety.
“This is the way it goes on competitions,” Cowell said about the boy band being sent home. “I’m gutted really for them because I thought they had a fantastic night last night but it happens. I’m very, very disappointed.”
Carly Rose, Tate and Fifth Harmony will compete in the finals next Wednesday and the season two winner will be revealed during the live finale results show Thursday.
