The rumors are true. Jay-Z is releasing a new album this year. And it’s coming a lot sooner than you think.
The Grammy-winning rap legend will release his new set, Magna Carta Holy Grail, on July 4. He announced plans for the album’s release in a commercial for Samsung, which aired during the NBA finals tonight (June 16).
“The album is about this duality of how do you navigate through this whole thing… through success, through failures, through all this and remain yourself,” Jay says in the black and white clip, which is a behind the scenes look at the making of the album, featuring Rick Rubin, Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, and Swizz Beatz.
“We don’t have any rules. Everyone’s trying to figure it out. That’s why the internet is like the wild west. The wild, wild west. We need to write the new rules,” he said. “The idea is to really finish the album then drop it. Giving it to the world at one time and letting them share it and it goes out.”
Magna Carta Holy Grail will be available for free download to the first million Samsung customers using a Samsung Galaxy SIII, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note II via the Magna Carta app.
