NBC’s hit reality singing competition show, The Voice, made its return last night (September 23) with a big season five premiere.

Coaches Adam Levine and last season’s winner Blake Shelton were joined on the panel by original coaches Cee-Lo Green and Christina Aguilera to sift through the best talent out there. Their mission is to once again fill up their teams with singers chosen from the blind auditions to take to the battle rounds. Those who survive the battle rounds will go head to head in the knockout round before facing America’s vote in the live shows.

Got it? Good. Now let’s look at a few of the highlights from last night’s premiere of The Voice season five:

Kat Robichaud: Kat’s played in a band for years but she took some time off to focus on her life outside of music. Now she’s back and rocking with a performance of “I’ve Got The Music In Me.” Xtina, Cee-Lo and Blake all loved it but Kat wants to be down with Cee-Lo. He scores the very first artist of the season. It’s on!

Caroline Pennell: How cute is Caroline?! And her voice? Angelic! This quirky and shy 17-year-old did a great job performing Ellie Goulding’s “Anything Could Happen,” catching the ears of Cee-Lo and Blake. She feels like a Blake artist but maybe Cee-Lo’s refreshed energy is really working because he lands another one.

Donna Allen: She may be in he 50’s but Donna is proving that it’s never too late to go after your dream. Her soulful performance of “You Are So Beautiful” almost immediately got Christina to turn. Adam followed shortly and the first Adamtina showdown of the season started. Xtina made her plea and even got some backup support by Blake. Adam got in some of his classic begging and it works. Adam goes to hug his very first team member of the season and she jumps up on him. Watch it, Donna! He’s engaged you know.

Matthew Schuler: Matt gets the first four coach turn of the season and he does it just seconds into his blind audition of “Cough Syrup.” Each coach begs for their chance to have this soulful, talented dude but no one begs more than Adam. He even jumps for joy out of his seat. That doesn’t work though because Matthew jumps on Team Xtina.

Shelbie Z.: Shelbie loves her jobs as a hairstylist and pageant coach but she loves music more than anything else. For her blind audition, she tore the stage up to “Here For The Party” and got everyone but Adam to turn around. “Let me be the first to welcome you to Team Blake,” a confident Blake said to the country singer. He was right though. She picks him as her coach.

James Wolpert: Another big four coach turn! James poured his soul on the stage with a fan-freaking-tastic performance of Jack White’s “Love Interruption” and impressed every single coach. The coaches’ fighting get fierce but James run to Team Adam.
