4 Tracks You Need To Know From Drake’s New Album, Nothing Was The Same

drake nwts review

One of the most anticipated albums of the year is finally here. Drake‘s third album, Nothing Was The Same, was released officially on September 24, but leaked more than a week prior, giving fans a chance to digest the collection that would presumably solidify Drizzy’s status as rap’s new top dawg.

So, does the Canadian sensation’s new album live up to the hype? If you ask us, absolutely. But you have to know what to expect. NWTS isn’t for the casual fan of Radio Drizzy. There aren’t any obvious radio singles, save for the pop masterpiece that is “Hold On, We’re Going Home.” If you’re looking for a bunch of easy listens, ala “Make Me Proud,” “Fancy,” or “Take Care,” you’re out of luck. But if hearing a more self-assured Drizzy spit alongside Jay Z (“Pound Cake”), take aim at Kendrick Lamar and anyone else talking ish to get a reaction (“The Language”), and deliver boastful bars for six minutes over an insane Whitney Houston sample just because he effing can (“Tuscan Leather”), you’re going to love NWTS.

We spent some time listening (non-stop) to Nothing Was The Same over the last couple weeks, and chose the four tracks we think you definitely need to know. Find out which songs are at the top of our list in this 4 tracks review below:

Own It: The sexy continuation of “Wu-Tang Forever” takes away the rap game analogy and leaves Drizzy pouring his heart out to a girl, who hasn’t always been the most supportive (“Where you been at? On tour getting money/You don’t even really check for me/You ain’t even hit me when that n*gga had threats for me, girl/You don’t love me/You just say that sh*t to get to me, girl”) but still somehow owns his heart (“You’re still the one that I adore/Ain’t much out there to have feelings for/Guess whose it is…yours”).

Worst Behavior: Drizzy gets a lot of love these days, but on “Worst Behavior” he’s reminding everyone that that wasn’t always the case. He’s indeed on his worst behavior as he brashly raps lines like “They used to never wanna hear us/Remember?/Muhf*ckas never loved us” and “B*tch, you better have my money when I come for the sh*t like ODB” over a chaotic DJ Dahi-produced beat, before borrowing Ma$e’s “Mo Money, Mo Problems” flow.

Connect: A baseball metaphor sets the tone for Drizzy’s moody stunner about trying and failing to make a relationship work with a girl who isn’t worth the effort. “How beautiful our kids would be/Girl, I don’t need convincing… Oh, the idea is so fun every time/At least we try for homerun every time.” Drake is swinging and missing in love, but he connects with some of his most quotable lines yet on this track. “She used to say you can be whoever you want, even yourself/I show up knowing exactly who I was, and never leave as myself/But when it fall apart, I’m always still down to pick a million tiny little pieces off the ground/Wish you would learn to love people and use things and not the other way around.”

Too Much featuring Sampha: The gorgeous, piano-driven “Too Much” reunites Drizzy with his “The Motion” co-star, Sampha, for a very personal track about the affects of his fame on his psyche and family. “Back rub from my main thing/I been stressed out,” Drizzy raps of the pressures to be number one. On the second verse, he’s at his confessional best, giving fans a peek into his private family life. “Money got my whole family going backwards/No dinners, no holidays, no nothing/There’s issues at hand that we’re not discussing,” he raps, revealing his uncle has given up on his big dreams and his mom has become a somewhat of a recluse. Airing out his family’s business on a track might seem harsh, but according to Drizzy, it started a very necessary dialog.
