October’s very own Drake turns 23 years old today, and while it’s something to be excited about for his newer fans, we here at Neon Limelight are in full on celebration mode since we’ve watched the Toronto native go from teen actor (with one unfortunate haircut) on the Canadian drama Degrassi: The Next Generation to one of the most promising rappers in the game.

As he tweets about wanting Keri Hilson to sing her sexy single “Slow Dance” to him for his ultimate birthday gift, we started thinking about an episode of Degrassi where his character, the pre-paralysis Jimmy Brooks, wanted nothing more than to spend his 14th birthday with his girlfriend, Ashley Kerwin (played by Melissa McIntyre).

Things were going to be different this year. His parents, who are always working, promised to be home to cook a lobster dinner for him and Ash. The Jimster ruined his chances of the perfect b-day by being too clingy, having dinner with Ashley’s family every night for over a week leading up to the big day. Ashley started to feel suffocated. She devises a plan to break up with him but wanted to wait until after his big day. Her little brother, who is close with Jimmy, overheard and told Jimmy.

He plays along with Ashley’s plan to wait until the end of the day when he gets home to discover a voice message by his mom telling him dinner plans were off. Jimmy breaks up with Ashley instead and has a lonely man pizza for one. Total sad face!

Needless to say Drake’s birthday will be much better. He’ll be partying in Washington DC with his pal Trey Songz at club Love where there will be plenty of ladies to save him from any b-day blues.

Happy birthday, Drizzy! We celebrate your bright future by chuckling at your hilarious past!

Today is Cinco De Mayo and while many of you will be heading over to your favorite Mexican restaurant on your lunch breaks to take advantage of their holiday specials (half-off taco salad here I come!), some giddy fans (because they totally still exist!!!) will be celebrating Chris Brown’s 20th birthday!

OK…so we know what you’re thinking already. And we’re fully aware that this playlist could make us truly unpopular, but we’re going to do it anyway…

It was in our plans to do this playlist long before the unfortunate colossal mis-step Breezy made in February as he’s always been one of our favorite sexy fetuses, and while we don’t condone what he allegedly did by any means, we don’t feel at all terrible celebrating the music made by a young man we’ve enjoyed for almost four years.

So remember back one year ago today when you were freaking out, checking your computer obsessively for updates on the supposed wedding for Beyonce and Jay-Z. Then remember when it finally hit you; the day your little stan heart had been waiting for was finally happening. It made total sense. Beyonce was born on September 4, Jay on December 4, their first date was on July 4… 4-4-08! OMG!!!! Beyonce and Jay got married!!!!

December marks an exciting time of the year. No matter what your religion or culture, you can find three gift-giving heavy holidays (hey, don’t be mad at us because we proudly admit to loving that aspect of the holiday season. Tis far hawt to receive, lovelys!); days are shorter, so the night partying begins earlier; it’s cold so you can wear those totally ugly, but amazingly warm Ugg boots; and the year is wrapping up so everyone will be making those super moist year-end lists!

Neon Limelight doesn’t like to be left out, so we’re getting in on the list making magic by compiling some of our favorite things of 2008 in music. From our favorite songs, music videos, musical couples, new artists and much more, we’ll be counting them all down in the next few weeks.

So who died and made us important enough to make a list, you ask? No one, honestly. But we’re gonna do it anyway! You may disagree with our lists. You may even want to burn us alive for some of our picks. It’s OK. We encourage your rage. We don’t claim to be music experts. Just a few folks who need tunes daily to survive. Ahh, sick days. They’re the best. The day off work, soup, and daytime television. While I was home enjoying suffering through the day with a damned cold, I was able to catch up on one of the best daytime TV shows: The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Fact: I adore Ellen. She helped ease my fear of blue fish with bad memories, made one of the usually insufferable Beyoncé American Express commercials funny, and dances on a daily basis (sometimes with the Jonas Brothers). Today she pointed out one of my most recent annoyances, the autotune boom, turned it around and made it awesome.

After being inspired by Kanye West’s performance on her show the day before, she decided to join the autotune mic movement and did her best Cher impersonation. Singing Cher’s 1998 comeback dance hit “Believe,” she proved what T-Pain proves everyday: anyone can sing with autotune.

Ellen needs to record an album. I’d buy it!

Here at Neon Limelight, we’re extremely passionate about music and entertainment, but we’re also very excited and passionate about this year’s presidential election. While we know seeing Rihanna and Chris Brown hold hands, or Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas sit next to eachother at an awards show is, like, really important, we also know that the future of this country is a bit more important.

We are not going to tell you who to vote for. That’s not our job. But we do want to urge you to at least get registered to vote. It’s fast, easy, and you can do it online while checking out the latest pics of Beyoncé in the browser tab right next to the registation page.
